Bird Anne Lamott: Poetic Analysis

“So now I always tell my students about the Gulf-Stream: that what it means for us, for writers, is that we need to align ourselves with the river of the story” Bird by Bird Anne Lamott. This quote stuck out to me when I first read it, mainly because I am not usually a fan of poetic metaphors. However this is so cohesive it does not just seem as if it is a filler but it adds to the piece. Illustrating her thoughts in a vivid way and drawing a conclusion to her lengthy anecdote, it brings a deeper meaning to an almost unconnected story. The connection to writing and real world events is very important to further our understanding of our individual writing as well as how it can connect from paper to day to day life.
In third grade creative writing was encouraged, however was not taught. Cursive, reading comprehension and subjects pertaining to those were drilled into our heads. However, expressing ourselves through writing just had to come naturally and my imagination went rampant. I have to say my passion started with a story about gum. The project was simple, write a one paragraph story about a day in the life of a piece of bubblegum. The story had changed a total of four times before I turned in it,

As I wrote I grew an attachment to my writing wanting to develop it as one would raise a child. Helping it to a more mature state. My reading of course did not take a backseat to this, as I would naturally improve my skills of comprehension as I improved my writing. I was consuming as many books as to get an idea for new stories or charactors. Sometimes if I found myself lost ina plot going nowheire or worried my wrting style would be to simple I would pick up new books to get a different perspective. With this my vocabulary and reading compreshension was taken to new levels and it was a challenge for me to find novels that did not get

You know that moment, that oh so wonderful moment, when someone takes the time to put pen to paper and write something that perfectly pairs words to your emotions and psychological state of mind? Much like a juvenile game of match the word with the picture, that we all greatly enjoyed playing in kindergarten. And you think to yourself, this person gets me, they understand what it is like to live with these thoughts, bucking around like a bull in a china shop. What a feeling it is to truly feel appreciated. That is precisely how I felt when reading Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, understood and not sequestered in my own sense of panic, worry, doubt, anxiousness, and the ability to become utterly distracted by everything under the sun as soon as…

The River artfully uses symbolism to stimulate the reader’s intellect. Flannery O'Connor wanted the reader to think deeply to comprehend the story. Instead of stating the message outright, she hides it behind a layer of abstraction, in order to make the story more memorable. It forced me to think hard about the story and its message, and it made me realize how much I had to gain by reading her…

In "words are birds" Francisco X. Alarcón uses many metaphors comparing words to birds to suggest that words, although many and vastly different, all fall under one category and unite us all. The poem begins by giving the reader an overview of how words and birds are related: "words / are birds / that arrive / with books / and spring" (1-5). The correlation between words and books is obvious, as they are often put together, but the author is comparing words to spring as well to show that we use words from basically birth, and the line "and spring" brings to mind ideas of birth and renewal. This is just one example of how we all speak different kinds of words, but they all fall under the category that is "words", just like we all talk, or babble from birth, even if it is in different languages.…

I remember my mother read the book of Nacho to me every afternoon so I could learn how to read. My mother also read the book called Coquito, every night before going to bed.…

Literacy Narrative I did a lot of writing while I was in the tenth grade. The English teacher I had at the time was the best when it came down to writing. I did not have too much interest in writing at the time but Mrs. Perez changed that, she gave me a new perception on writing and how it can change society. Mrs. Perez would always recommend really good books, one of which was a book called “His Dark Materials”. This story is about a young girl and her allies, fight for the discover of a dark substance called the “Dust”.…

We - as civilization - are shaped by our interactions with people. Some people have an engaged personality; generally bold or active. Other people tend to have a shy or introverted personality, preferring to be engaged in a small group of friends and stray from large groups. I am both partially introverted and extroverted, but prefer the latter. Reading is such a major part of my life; from the time I could comprehend the written word, I had always turned towards book.…
