One summer day years ago, I took a friends son with us to Busch Gardens, he was the same age as my 10 year old son and they we friends. As we drove up to park we were talking about biracial families and how some kids don’t look like their parents of a different color. Well, Jose was the boy’s name and I said to him, “Well, just because you have a different dad than your brother it’s okay because I wasn’t raised by my biological dad either.” Unbeknownst to me, Jose did not know that wasn’t his biological father and said, “What do you mean?” After some attempted backpedaling, Jose went back home and asked his mom is his dad was his real biological dad and his mom told him it was, to pacify him. But he kept on questioning it and the truth came

I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…

I’m biracial. That sentence took me a long time to accept. My entire life up to this point at age seventeen has always been about the question: who am I? What am I? As a half white, half chinese citizen of New Hampshire, fitting in took me a little more effort than the average person.…

My family and I consider ourselves to be primarily of Hispanic race and, more specifically, our ethnicity to be Mexican American. My mother’s side of the family is from the city of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico while my father’s side is from the states of Sinaloa and Sonora in Mexico. So, it’s safe to say my family is very Mexican. Both of my parent where actually born in Mexico but were brought over to the United states as infants. However, if we go back even further three generations before me both sides of my family are actually from Germany.…

I was born on December 20th, 1996, in Vienna, Virginia. My incredible parents, Kevin and Melissa, are black and white respectively. They both grew up without a lot, but worked tirelessly, just as their parents had done before them, to ensure that my brother and I had everything that we needed, and most of what we wanted. Although we were well above middle class on a national scale, at our predominantly white all-boys private school filled with multi-millionaire families, we were outliers. That didn’t bother me until my freshman year of high school, when I noticed that the “cool” older kids, especially the black ones, all wore basketball shoes.…

Imagine you are at an art museum and you find yourself in the abstract art section, the cubism, surrealism, fauvism. You gaze at the paintings with confusion, questions, and wonder trying to figure out what they mean. You look around and catch a glimpse of others around you with similar expressions. These sights of confusion, questions, and wonder are constants in my life. Similar to an abstract painting, people are confused by my appearance, and yet I have no discombobulated body like a Picasso or Dalí paintings.…

Family separation due to United States law, is when a family member is either deported or detained from the United States due to the lack of legal documentations. A mixed-status family is when a fraction of the family members are U.S. residents or citizens and the other members are undocumented or unauthorized to reside in the United States. Children of immigrants, undocumented or not, currently comprise 1 in 5 of all U.S.-born children. It is estimated that approximately 5 million of these children, the majority of whom are native-born U.S. citizens, live in mixed-status families with one or more undocumented parent (First Focus. 2010). With this being shared, how has family separation, due to mixed-status families, affected the immigration movement in the United States?…

To gain a better understanding of the African American family, one must study the African philosophy and cosmology. By learning about the philosophies origins and its five themes, the black family will be able to harmonize itself and begin to see what is wrong with research done by people like E. Franklin Frazier and Daniel Moynihan. Once this is accomplished the black family can free itself from western conceptual incarceration. There are five central themes in African philosophy and cosmology that are outlined by T’Shaka. These themes are harmonious twin-ness, unicity, Maat, Nommo or the word, and transformation and change from the lower self to higher through spiral motion (T’Shaka 90).…
