There are many different types of mental illnesses out there in the world. One of those illnesses is Bipolar Disorder. As stated by the National Institute of Mental Health, Bipolar Disorder is, “also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks” (Bipolar Disorder, N.P). This illness was first discovered in first century Greece when Aretaeus of Cappadocia ‘saw the unnoticed link between mania and depression.The Greeks identified manic and depression as ‘mania’ and ‘melancholia’; they also found out that lithium salt baths helped calm people with mania. Some of the treatments one can get are medication, electroconvulsive therapy and supplements. Medications are used to help one ‘control the symptoms of bipolar disorder’; These medications are mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics and antidepressants. ECT would be used on people with severe bipolar disorder or when one cannot take medication because it is to risky. Along with taking medication, one can participate in psychotherapy. This type of therapy is a, “term for a variety of treatment techniques that aim to help a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts, and behavior. Most psychotherapy takes place with a licensed and trained mental health care professional and a patient meeting one on one or with other patients in a group setting.”(Psychotherapy, Np) Some of the psychotherapy treatments are cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, family focused therapy and interpersonal and social rhythm therapy. The average age for one to start showing signs of bipolar disorder is 25, but anyone can start showing signs at any age. A majority of the time people inherit this from people in their family that were already diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In children if one parent has this there is 15-30% chance they will inherit this to and it doubles if both parents have the disorder. Even though both men and women can have this disorder, it is most of the time women that have this disorder; They have more depressive episodes. In treatment using lithium, there is about a 75% success rate with “acute phase treatment of mania” and response rates of about 50%’ (Hotline Information, NP).
