Bioscience High School Personal Statement

My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life. This challenge allowed me to push myself and grow as not only a learner but also as an individual. Being encouraged to branch out into the community has allowed me to go beyond my comfort zone and aided to …show more content…
Being located in the heart of downtown Phoenix has provided me with opportunities that will greatly benefit me in the future. I love my school but some of my interest, such as sports and music classes, are not offered but that has not limited me. I believe that having to go out of my way to do some extracurricular activities has allowed me to experience things that have been life changing and allowed me to be a more creative individual and explore the great opportunities offered in the metropolitan area. The transformation that I have gone through from freshman year to where I am currently is unbelievable. I am knowledgeable, well-rounded, a critical thinker, a compassionate citizen and been empowered to change the world.
At bioscience, I discovered my passions. Teachers, staff and the community have supplied me with all the tools to take what I learn in school and apply it in a meaningful way. .At our school, we have a yearlong project called an STF, Sustainable Transformative Framework, dedicated for students to challenge themselves to deeply analyse a problem

The human body is arguably the most researched organism on Earth. The intricate relationship between molecular, anatomical and physiological characteristics of it astounds me, yet what interests me most is not how powerful the human body is as a whole, but how ultimately our physiology can fail us. Studying biology at an undergraduate level will allow me to grasp a deeper understanding as to why this happens, as well as develop my existing knowledge of the mechanisms involved in keeping humans alive. A-level biology has provided me with a broad spectrum of knowledge; topics outlining the function of the body, such as the circulatory system and the immune system, have further stimulated my desire to pursue degree level study.…

I underestimated my capacity for growth and learning. Though the small size and geographic isolation are rewarding for many, I long for more resources. I miss the social diversity that I had in high school. The college that I do want to study at has more academic resources and a more diverse community. Although I can challenge myself wherever I am, I want to be in a place where others are challenging themselves as well.…

The field of science fascinated me even throughout high school. In my Sophomore biology class we worked on a project involving microorganisms from a local pond and from that point forth I knew that this was my dream job. I asked my Biology teacher, Mr Goudy, if he knew how the job market looked for a microbiologist and when he said that it was a growing field, it only made my passion for the study intensify. He also informed me of the growing need due to bacteria developing resistances to the medicines that we currently use at a faster than ever rate. I now have come to Iowa State because I know of the great biology program that the school offers and I wish to eventually graduate from the program with a degree that could lead me to a variety…

When I was in high school, I noticed how my grandfather used to heal some sicknesses; such as diabetus by using the natural products; for instance, extracts from regional plants. I remember when my grandmother was diagnosed as diabetus patiant and how the diabetus affected her lifestyle; and how many medications were described to her and how she was unsatisfied about the changing in her lifestyle. I remember how my grandfather used one of plant extracts from traditional folk medicine in my country to control her blood glucose level. That approach of treatment fascinated me and encouraged me to become curious about what the dibetus is, and what the mechanism of this disease, and how I can understand the mechansm of this disease in biological system. After high school, I was wondering about the major that is dealing with and meeting my interest toward Pharmacological and toxicological sciences until my grandfather who was the godfather for me at that time encouraged me to…

Personal Statement To wander into the domain of science is to seek after a way of vast disclosures and to have the chance to venture into such a field and widen my insight has always been an enthusiasm of mine. Biology has always enticed me, as learning about the way our body is particularly 'engineered' to battle against infection, has constantly grasped my interests. What fascinates me most about the workings and mechanics of the human body is how it constantly overcomes the many challenges to fight for survival. As my curiosity spikes I constantly ask myself questions like: why do our adapted bodies sometimes fail to protect us? How can such complex illness be treated?…

In my summer job as a camp counselor, I worked with a camper, Morgan, who first illustrated to me the potential life-changing impact of biomedical engineering. Morgan had suffered a serious accident and lost both her left arm and leg. This potentially debilitating event seemed but a small inconvenience to her, as a complex prosthetic leg allowed her to play handball, hike through the woods, and ride in a canoe with the effortlessness and poise found in any confident young girl. This experience sparked my interest in biomedical engineering, as I saw how I could use the combination of medicine and engineering to make a difference in someone else’s life. I intend to pursue a biomedical imaging and instrumentation focus within my major…

When I was a child my parents would always take me to the Science Museum near my home once a week. Going to the science museum and always seeing the different exhibits such as the planetarium and the environmental park peaked my interest in science as a kid. I also remember early in elementary school making a whirlpool by taking two 2 liter bottles and filling one of them with food colored water and then taping them together to show the whirlpool. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years. This interest has led me to my love of science.…

Firsthand, I know the feeling of helplessness during hardship; from living paycheck to paycheck in a single parent home, witnessing my grandfather become ill, and being physically assaulted by my father as a child. In each experience, I had neither control over the circumstances affecting my life, nor a confidant, which created the feeling of isolation. Although I have always been self-motivated and remained positive to endure hard times, it was not until I enrolled at Spelman College that I realized the value of community and a sense of control over one's life. A career in epidemiology, for me, means the avenue by which I can offer a sense of control to those experiencing adversity, and improve lives.…

On completion of my secondary school education in Lagos, Nigeria, and while waiting for my undergraduate admission into the university, I sometimes watched/ assisted my dad whenever he was preparing project proposals or actually executing building construction projects. I didn’t know it as at then, but I think that was when I started having this unconscious attraction toward anything that had the word project written next to it. Any mention of the word project and my ears would be on alert. My education and life experiences over the years have gotten me to this point, where I am excited to be applying for a Master of Science (MS) degree program in Technology Project Management. I can recall my first group assignment during my undergraduate days in the university.…

Personal Statement I am writing this Personal Statement in support of my application to study for a Master’s degree in Biochemistry at the California State University Sacramento. My interest in Biochemistry has always been a real world interest, and my desire to study Biochemistry at the Master’s level is likewise fueled by the imperativeness of the subject and the crucial role it plays in our everyday lives. The part I want to play as a Biochemist – in bringing to the world's attention the implications of current health practices, various diseases, and living processes – is in my point of view, the essence of biochemical studies. Society has continued solving challenges, seemingly insurmountable and perhaps more pressing than we have ever faced – I strive to be at the forefront of the “solution-finding” as a research scientist.…

My fascination to bioengineering started with a bitter experience after my undergraduate degree. I had secured a job in a MNC and was awaiting my joining date, being a enthusiastic basketball player I started playing basketball in my free time. During such a day I twisted my knee and tore the ligaments of my knee which made bed ridden for the next two months. I was captivated by the work done by my orthopedician and my therapist. But to add to it, I was equally frustrated by the deficiency in assistive devices that were there to help me.…
