After some struggles trying to start a small business, my parents declared bankruptcy in early 2011 and lost their home. The following year and a half was a low point for our family. With slow, steady perseverance and planning my father was able to not only find steady work to provide for the family, but also to return to college where he will graduate with a communications degree in the fall. During some of those low points we would have late-night talks. He would look back at the past, what he would have done differently. Hashi Ehsan. It was his first semester at UHV as well. I went on to take Cell and Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering with him. I can still recall his excited narratives to the faculty when our undergraduate lab successfully cloned a portion of the GAPDH gene from plants we collected from a nearby nursery. When I began the Master’s program I worked as his TA and virtual instructor. He added direction to my desire. On one of our weekly commutes to teach a Genetics lab in Sugarland, he asked me what my plans were upon graduation. I told him how much I’d enjoyed the research projects we had done and as well as the opportunities he afforded me to run the lecture on occasion. Despite having some poor undergraduate marks, he encouraged me to reach out to the best researchers in the field, to make my vision a reality. I believe equally as important as my Biology background at UHV is my training and exercise background at the Victoria YMCA. As a trainer and group instructor at the Y, I experienced some of the most fulfilling, most energizing, and most actualized applications of science to life. Having gotten to speak with Dr.’s LaVoy and Markofski and seen the Health and Human Performance labs, I
