Biomedical Engineering Personal Statement

Improved Essays
I was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when I was three years old. Growing up my parents worked all the time and my older siblings would take care of my twin sister and I. Despite my parents not being able to be there at all times, they instilled in me the importance of school and hard work. It is because of their sacrifices and hard work that I have been able to become the person I am today.

As a result of the various science related classes that I have taken, I intend to study biomedical engineering. I aspire to be like the biomedical engineer Guy German, who produced a DNA film that could one day be the sunscreen and band aids we all use, or a part of a research team, similar to the team at the University of Bonn who discovered

My parents came to America from Argentina, fleeing collapse and insecurity. They came here to provide a better life for me, one which simply couldn’t be found in Argentina, and I’m more than thankful I was born here. To immigrate in search of a better life for one’s children is a praiseworthy act of devotion, of love. Millions of young Latinos live in this country today because their parents or grandparents made the decision to immigrate in search of a better life. Far too often, what they and their children found instead was only poverty, bigotry, and hardship—oft-insurmountable obstacles.…

In the spring of 2007, many things changed in my life. It all started at SeaTac airport as my family and I slowly shuffled through the bustling, congested airplane aisles. As we neared the plane exit, my heart begun to race in a cluster of excitement, curiosity, and in the deep corner of my mind, fear. Finally, it was our turn to leave. Our family slowly dragged our luggage along, into the bland and grey hallway which smelled of strangeness.…

Ever since I was young, I have been exposed to graduate school labs. My father dedicated his life, passion, and determination to his emotional engineering research and students. I grew up watching my father formulate innovative hypotheses and implement them in real-life engineering systems; from these observations, I have grown my own passion and determination to achieve something similar in my future. I pursued my education in engineering in college, and although my grades in my initial years were not excellent, I have matured as a student and followed my studies seriously by challenging myself with difficult technical courses. Overall, my undergraduate studies enabled me to discover the specific field that I was most interested in: dynamics and biomedical engineering.…

Over time, when electronics greeted medicine, the healthcare industry was accelerated to perform tremendous feats. Inventions such as bionic arms, prosthetic eye, CT, and others have had me stupefied.…

The American Dream is becoming harder to achieve. A report from the Pew Charitable Trusts found that “most Americans raised at the bottom of the income ladder never reach the middle rung.” Growing up in a poor migrant family I am experiencing many challenges that poor people have to overcome to move up. Had my parents not come to the United States when I was a child, I would have not had an opportunity get out of poverty. If I stayed in Mexico my possibility to have gone to get an formal education would have been less, considering the cost of school and education quality in Mexico is not affordable or good.…

To a biomedical engineer, research provides the opportunity to understand how the human body operates and the ability to develop treatment options to improve the health of human beings. Personally, I feel that research gives me the power to make a direct impact on helping those who are suffering. Additionally, it provides a different skill set that cannot be obtained in any course offered at the university which makes me value my experiences even more. From what I have learned since last year when I began participating in undergraduate research, is that there is no expected or correct answer. This sharpens our creative thinking and problem solving skills while we try and understand what the data means and how we can further the research to…
