This past summer I was electrified to be accepted to conduct research at the Feinstein institute for Medical Research. While, I had to do background reading in order to understand the renal research being conducted; the experiments that I was doing under the supervision of my mentor were enough to supplement my literature review. I was even able to reconcile my passion for biomedical engineering and nanotechnology into my research. My project was to see how Monosodium urate activates Protein Kinase R and concurrently the NLRP3 inflammasome in human renal Proximal tubular Cells. The activation of this inflammasome would induce and further progress Tubulointerstitial Fibrosis: end stage chronic kidney disease. Doing research is very interesting for me, but the feeling I got when I was able to bring biomedical sciences into the lab was unparalleled. I proposed that nanotechnology and cellular targeting be used to control the level of Monosodium urate and Protein Kinase R so that the chances for tubulointerstitial fibrosis progression
