Statement of Purpose
I am a senior at Wichita State University studying Biomedical Engineering. I expect to graduate in May of 2018 with magna cum laude distinction. As an undergraduate, I have the opportunity to tutor underclassmen in physics. Eventually, I became an undergraduate teaching assistant as well. Both of these made me realize how much I enjoy helping students learn, which made me think about pursuing graduate education to become a college professor. Assisting in a biomechanics lab made it clear that it was something I wanted to pursue. My goal is to enter the accelerated master’s program in biomedical engineering at Wichita State University this spring.
As a high school student, I took every math and science course I could, because I enjoyed those topics. I had an opportunity to shadow in a medical lab as part of an internship experience. I enjoyed medicine, but medical lab science was not for me. It was almost completely automated with machines and monotonous. During my first semester at Wichita State University, I

I have been a physics tutor for three semesters and an undergraduate teaching assistant for one semester. My duties as a tutor include helping the students with concepts and problem-solving. As a teaching assistant, I grade in addition to those

On october 5, 2015 I stared across the living room at my parents wondering how I was going to find the words to explain to them one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I had loved softball since I was a little girl and despite many years of hard work and hundreds of hours, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was the right choice for me. Growing up watching my idol, Lauren Chamberlain pursue her dreams inspired me, I spent much of my childhood emulating my hero and dreaming one day I could be just like her. My dreams were briefly interrupted when I started thinking about the future as I got older and realized that my heart really wasn't in the game of softball as much as it once was. After visits to smaller universities and long talks with head coaches, I had come to realize that playing softball in college and the small school atmosphere wasn't really what I wanted anymore.…

On the internet, there is a "meme" called the Asian grading system. Though amusing, it reveals some of the pressures that Asian Americans often face growing up with overbearing parents. Students without parents to push them struggle to catch up in the competitiveness environment that exists in high schools across America. I'm a victim of the race to perfection, academic excellence and the pressures of failure and shortcomings. I'm not the only one and I won't be the last.…

Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

Have you ever realized how quickly someone's life can change with just one event? Well, I have, and this is why I am trying really hard to accomplish my goals of becoming a doctor for I believe that with that event I can change my life and others too. I am Danaika F. Desir, a young black girl who migrated to the United States, seven years ago to chase the American dream through education, and the sole purpose: to one day become a successful physician. This also meant that my life consisted of a series of homework and studies. My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life.…

Junior year I decided to simultaneously take AP biology and anatomy, which was difficult at times because both subjects heavily provide a lot of information. Overall, I looked forward towards learning about the human body because I genuinely wanted to know how the body works together to support itself. One notable challenge I had in anatomy was constantly taking assessments based off of the articles and what we learned. The class itself was fast-paced, which pushed me to devote more time towards studying and testing myself, allowing me to retain more information and prepare for tests. Of course that class changed me by causing me to develop studying habits whether if it was using quizlet and reviewing my notes, to watching YouTube lectures…

In my first semester of college, I have been exposed to so much and I have learned so much. Learning Basic Medical Science has allowed me to learn a variety of new things that I had never even heard of before or done before like immunohistochemistry, solving case studies, and T1/T2 translational research. Immunohistochemistry was really interesting and complex. At first, I overlooked it because I thought it was my over my head and not applicable to me at the moment.
