Biomedical Engineering Career Progression

I looked at the bar graph again, my stomach sinking. The career data was clear and there was no use trying to convince myself otherwise. My major in Biomedical Engineering was simply not going to take me the places I wanted to go in life. Chemical Engineering offered the salary, career security, and subject interest I desired, something my major in Biomedical Engineering did not do. Within 6 hours I had compiled all the information I needed to affirm that Chemical Engineering was the right major for me. Within a day I had switched my major. Within that week I found out that the Chemical Engineering program at RIT was over capacity and would not be accepting new students. Within that month I was enrolled in UMass Lowell.

By the time I transferred I had independently utilized RIT’s resources, was taking public transit across Rochester, handling my own medical insurance, renting my own apartment, working 30 hours a week, and advocating for myself in all areas of my life. This rapid period of personal growth and independence was fostered in a large part by my RA freshman year. My RA was not a parent. She did not coddle me. She did not hold my hand through every issue. She was a mentor. She informed me of the resources RIT had available, she offered her own life experiences when I came to her with a problem, and she taught me how to act like an adult based on her own actions. Additionally she encouraged me to embrace failure, embrace my discomfort at new things, and view my failures as opportunities for the future.
Transferring allowed me to see how much I have grown as a person since I was a freshman and how that growth was fostered by an RA with maturity, life experience, and grit. Those qualities in my RA shaped me for success and now that I have those qualities myself I sincerely believe that I can make that same difference in other students’

The institution has a Biological Sciences degree which allows me, as a soon to be graduate from Hagerstown Community College with an Associate’s in Biology, to pursue and finish the next level of post-secondary education, achieving a Bachelor’s degree. In addition to pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences, UMBC has many clubs and activities to be involved in which will allow me to create new friends and provide a way to network with other students that has the same goals as me. I strongly believe that at my local community college, most of the students and professors don’t share similar ideas and goals as me and was difficult to find and achieve things I want to do after college. Being a first-generation college student, I understand the challenges that students of similar backgrounds face due to not having parents to lean on for academic support. Having received guidance from different programs regarding the transfer process, I used the knowledge I obtained to do something that gave three of my closest friends, who are from similar backgrounds and don’t have such resources, an experience that would ignite the same passion and desire that I have to succeed in college. This was accomplished during the summer of 2015 when I researched, planned, and carried out a trip to various UC, CSU, and private schools throughout northern and southern California. By visiting new universities and visiting academic departments, I hoped…

On a particularly sunny morning in Washington, Mr. Charbonnel, sipping on a mug of tea over skype, answered my question regarding his choice in university. He gave me two separate answers to my questions. The first answer being the one he gave to his family and friends, “I wanted to go to school with my sister so I applied to Washington State!”. But after a moment’s chuckle he responded, “The actual reason why I choose Washington State over any other school was that I had procrastinated all first semester, and it was the only school that was actually still taking applicants.”. Having known Mr. Brandon Charbonnel most of my life, once as a teacher now as a friend and a somewhat of a role model, I was satisfied with the second answer he had…
