However, a distinction needs to be made between “enhancement” and “disability,” especially when it comes to deafness within children. In the eyes of the parents (who both happen to be deaf), they genuinely believe that if their child is born with the same traits as the parents such as deafness or blindness, it will improve the quality or even value of their child. Some are created with inherent flaws and others break down before their time. However, manipulating with traits should not be allowed because it allows for parents to go to the extremes of changing their child’s traits and in many cases it cannot be reversed once children get older, but how do we truly know if parents will be satisfied with the results. It also brings up the question of: Where do we draw the line when it comes to selective breeding? What I will say is that science has the potential to do good with problems such as diseases and should be utilized to do good for everyone.
