Bioluminescent Millipedes Summary

Decent Essays
This article discusses the research behind the bioluminescent millipedes. These rare species are classified as Motyxia. Paul Marek is an entomologist who was determined to find these rare millipedes near San Luis Obispo, California. Marek set out on his journey in 2013. Bioluminescent millipedes are fluorescent, meaning they glow a green hue under UV light. Marek found it easier to search for the millipedes during the night. Soon after arriving at his location he found three bioluminescent millipedes. In a previous article written by Marek, he described in depth the characteristics of these rare millipedes. He found that as the elevation of the millipedes habitat increased so did the brightness of their skin. As the brightness of their skin

The purpose of the lab was to observe the environmental impact on the behavior of pill bugs (Armadillidium vulgare) by using the steps of the scientific method. . We placed two pill bugs in an enclosed space and recorded the amount of time they spent in two categories of living spaces: hard rocks or soft sphagnum moss. Despite predicting that they would have a preference for a softer area, both pill bugs spent more of their time in the rocks than in the moss. This suggests that Armadillidium vulgare has a preference towards environments with hard surfaces over soft ones, possibly due to factors like light or surface area. However, certain experimental errors such as material density and poor handling may have skewed the accuracy of results.…

Rock Pocket Mouse Questions 2. A rock pocket mouse’s color influences whether it survives or dies. The less visible the mouse is in its habitat, the more likely it will survive. Mice that stand out in their habitat have a greater chance of being spotted by a predator. Mice that are similar in color to their habitat are more likely to survive and reproduce.…

The termites followed the lines because of the chemicals that were in the Pentel Pen. Moreover, termites will follow mostly any straight or rounded line that is drawn by some pens. Lastly, if this experiment was repeated with the same sharp angled line and a more rounded angled line, the termites will most likely follow the more rounded angled line. Thus a new hypothesis can be made that states that termites will follow lines that mostly don't have sharp…

By applying different environmental factors on the living conditions of the pill bugs, we were able to procure a directional response (taxis). In both trial 1 and 3, our hypothesis turned out to be incorrect. The isopods were not evenly distributed across the choice chamber; however, this could be the result of the lack of intensity of the stimuli because their normal habit is generally moist. Solely based on these two trials admittedly, we can conclude that the moisture (wetness) of the environment does not significantly impact the pill bugs’…

Conclusion: In conclusion, there is not enough data to prove whether pillbugs prefer to reside in darkness or in lighted areas. The data collected fails to show a clear pattern and expressed an ambivalence towards the environments provided. As mentioned in the analysis, however, if one overlooks the data where the number in light and…

ambient light is significant. However, there are only 8 trials for these results so these results are not as accurate as the data that comes from the all trials from all the classes put together, which were 197. From these results the null hypothesis is rejected the experimental hypothesis is supported since the p-value was 0.314, which is much more that 0.05. This proves that the difference in average metabolic rate of goldfish in dark versus ambient light is not significant. The whole class results from all trials gives a better idea about whether metabolism of goldfish is effected when in normal light or in the dark.…

We put the sowbugs in a clear, plastic box and then we set our light source, which was a lamp, different distances away from the box. Then, we observed the sowbugs and collected data. We concluded that the sowbugs get farther away from the light as the lamp is closer to them since we can see in the graph from Presentation of Processed Data that when the lamp was 10 centimeters away from the box, the sowbugs got the farthest…

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……

The first hypothesis for this experiment is as the concentration of caffeine increases, there will be an increase in the pulsation rate. The null hypothesis is that as the concentration of caffeine increase, there will not be an increase in the pulsation rate. Based on the results, there was a statistical significance with a >95% confidence level in the difference of water and caffeine 10mM. Therefore, the experimental hypothesis is supported by the data and is accepted.…

American society is strongly rooted in the old traditions of its country. The nation has always been a desired destination for immigrants from countries all over the world. Consequently, the traditions practiced by the country as a whole can often be traced back to the roots of one of the many subcultures that make up American culture. One such tradition, practiced for Halloween, is the jack-o’-lantern. The jack-o’-lantern is made by hollowing the inside of a pumpkin and then carving a spooky face into the outer shell.…
