When I was a child my parents would always take me to the Science Museum near my home once a week. Going to the science museum and always seeing the different exhibits such as the planetarium and the environmental park peaked my interest in science as a kid. I also remember early in elementary school making a whirlpool by taking two 2 liter bottles and filling one of them with food colored water and then taping them together to show the whirlpool. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years. This interest has led me to my love of science. My interest in Biology started when I was a sophomore in high school and I had to take a biology class. Taking Biology in high school helped me develop a greater appreciation for …show more content…
Then my sophomore year in college I took an introduction to research class. In my introduction to research class I got to create my research project with a partner. We decided to conduct research on which brand of bar soap would get rid of the most bacteria on your face. We choose this because washing our faces provides our skin with hydration. Washing your face with bar soap is very common, there were a lot of brands to choose from. My partner and I surveyed women on campus to see which brand of soap they used. We use the four most popular soaps from our survey, they were: Dove, Caress, Dial, and Olay. We randomly chose 12 participants to see what soap got the most bacteria of their face. A sterile cotton swab was dipped in solution and was rubbed against the face before the wash. The participant washed their face with one of the chosen soap brands, and then another cotton swab was rubbed on their face after the wash. This experiment was conducted over the course of three days with 3 different participants to each soap brand. The study showed that the use of Dove brand bar soap decreased the most amounts of bacteria that were present on the face. I learned a lot from taking the introduction to research class like writing a scientific manuscript, and all the things that go into conducting research. I really enjoyed this research class, and it made feel that I strongly wanted to conduct more

My choice to have biochemistry as my major was the most logical, because for all of my life I have been interested in what life is composed of. I looked at the incredible things that people and animals do and I found that all the intricate working of biology and chemistry that made all of their actions possible, only added to the awesomeness of it all. Another important factor in my life that started my interest into the science of biology was my mother, who has a genetic anemia called Fanconi Anemia. She has lived with this genetic disease for all of her life and it has had a toll on her quality of life. From my earliest memories she has struggled with blood transfusions and bone marrow biopsies.…

In the BIO 14 Lab, we attempted to design a oviposition experiment that would tell us something about the relative behavior of two variants of a beetle species Callosobruchus maculatus (SI – originating from South India & BF – originating from Burkina Faso). The specific question being asked in our experiment is: How does the availability of the preferred bean type affect the oviposition strategy (measured by the number of eggs on each bean) of female SI and BF beetles? Most of our group members actually arrived this question at first independently and upon further discussion found that we all were looking to answer the same question. I arrived at this question as when looking that preferred seed of the two beetle types were so vastly energetically…

I owe my professional future to the McNair program and its research advisors and I aim to make them proud by continuing my journey into graduate education and the professoriate. Throughout the entire McNair summer program I was challenged to do things I had never done before. When applying, I was required to create a research proposal for the project I would conduct during the summer, including hypotheses, what data would be used, and how it would be analyzed. This was my introduction to research and it took much consultation and self-reflection to determine how to handle this first step in my journey.…

The project was hard, but the research was harder. Lyme is not a deadly disease, but it is extremely malicious, and it scared both my mom and I to learn about how harmful it could be. After I felt I had a good understanding of the disease and a strong base to start my project, a few curious clicks on Google led me to a website listing and explaining homeopathic remedies for Lyme. One in particular caught my eye, and while it didn't seem to have any official trials, I found many unofficial accounts of success with this remedy. I knew right away I wanted to test this therapy, so I developed a research question to not only present to my professors, but more importantly, to my…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

Personal Statement I am writing this Personal Statement in support of my application to study for a Master’s degree in Biochemistry at the California State University Sacramento. My interest in Biochemistry has always been a real world interest, and my desire to study Biochemistry at the Master’s level is likewise fueled by the imperativeness of the subject and the crucial role it plays in our everyday lives. The part I want to play as a Biochemist – in bringing to the world's attention the implications of current health practices, various diseases, and living processes – is in my point of view, the essence of biochemical studies. Society has continued solving challenges, seemingly insurmountable and perhaps more pressing than we have ever faced – I strive to be at the forefront of the “solution-finding” as a research scientist.…
