Biology 1009 Lab Final Paper
On a daily basis the human mouth comes in contact with millions of different materials and organisms. “The human mouth is home to billions of individual microorganisms, including viruses, protozoa, fungi, archaea, and bacteria” (University of Minnesota Department of Biology Teaching and Learning, 2016, p. 21). Two of these bacteria include, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacilli, the type of bacteria that was specifically looked at during the CURE lab. It was specifically looked at how someone could reduce S. mutans and Lactobacilli present in their mouth. In a study, it was shown that yogurt helped reduce the amount of bacteria present in a person’s mouth (Cildier et al., 2009) From this it was then concluded that other types of food, possible food related to yogurt such as dairy products, could help reduce the amount of bacteria present in a person’s mouth.
From farther research, the lab group produced multiple ideas related to many different kinds of food. It was narrowed from these ideas that milk had reduced the amount of bacteria in a person’s mouth (Adegboye, Christensen, Holm-Pedersen, Avlund, Boucher, & Heitmann, 2013). It has been shown that calcium helped in the aid of “adsorption rate” of some bacteria in the mouth (Potter & Nelson, 1952). It had also been presented in study that Vitamin D had decreased the amount of S. mutans present (Olliver, Spelmink, Hiew, Maeyer-Hoffert, Henriques-Normark, & Bergman, 2013). Almond…
