There is a profusion of reasons why counselees may be taking psychoactive medications, even threat of self-harm. Taking stock of this situation becomes a daunting task that can only be achieved by God’s abounding grace and mercy. Once all of the reasons for the medication and background information have been sufficiently brought forth, counselors then have the all-important job of depending on God to give them the wisdom to take the next steps. In some cases, the philosophies of counselors may be tested and tried as they deal with counselees dealing with extreme cases of psychotic behavior. Another issue faced by counselors concerns the counselees currently on psychoactive medications that wish to stop taking them. Counselors must not ever encourage counselees to quit taking their medications without speaking with a physician. Failure to do so may have serious detrimental consequences to both counselors and counselees. Closely related, counselors often face a question of philosophy and methodology when counselees on psychoactive medications begin responding to biblical counseling and counselors then must decide when the right time for counselees to begin ending their psychoactive medication
