Once Upon a Dream
Walter Elias Disney, also known as Walt, was one of the most famous entrepreneurs in the world. Many people recognize the name Disney due to all of the films the Disney Corporation has crated since his death and also the massive amusement park, Disney World! Although most Disney fans love his creations and films, they don’t know the true story of a man who went bankrupt or the struggle of creating his first amusement park, Disneyland. Six thousand invitations to the Grand Opening had been mailed and by mid-afternoon 28,000 ticket holders were storming the main entrance. The only problem was most tickets were counterfeit. After opening day there was a 15 day heat wave; temps were up above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. There was plumber strike happening that same week and only a small hand full of water fountains were up and running! The asphalt was practically eating any high heal shoe that touched it! Besides the terrible opening day conditions, ten years later the park finally picked up and has had fifty million visitors going in and out of the gates! Walt Disney was one of the greatest masterminds of his time and his legacy still lives today, 50 years after his death. No matter what stood in his way he always learned or found a way to get around the problem. In Walt Disney’s own words, “All the adversity I 've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” (Walt Disney

He quickly came up with the idea of creating an amusement park, which would satisfy both children and adults’ imagination and love of fantasy. This idea was put on hold through the Second World War, but eventually came to life on July 17th 1955, and would be known as Disneyland. This was one of Walt Disney’s most magical and personal projects, but it was conceived during an ambiguous and puzzling time of the American history. While some scholars believe that the amusement park is a place allowing individual choice and personal transformation through one’s imagination, others opted for a more cynical view, seeing a degree of consensual control and surveillance at the heart of its creation. Disneyland was not only an incredible success, but, during a time plagued by the nuclear scare and a communist threat, it became a beacon of hope, fun and adventure for the American…

The popularity of Walt’s theme park is evidence of him being innovative, it shows that he could create something so new and different but still have it become so popular so quickly. With this theme park Walt was putting his ideas out to the public not knowing what would happen but it became so successful. My third piece of evidence is “In 1971 Disney World in Orlando, Florida opened. Since then, Disney theme parks have opened in Tokyo and Paris” (Walter Elias Disney).
