Ullman And Woolman

The name Ullman and Woolman were interchangeable throughout the years, however, Woolman became the preferred spelling for Thomas and his family, from the time of his leaving the family home in Foley and moving to Parry Sound proper on his marriage to Rebecca on January 28, 1880. There he started out as the near ubiquitous lumberman and a new dad. Edith was born just a comfortable nine months later on November 13, 1880. It was too tough a go for him in the mills and he uprooted his family and headed back to Foley by 1882 with a mixture of farming and lumbering. That year, on Christmas Eve they had their second child and first boy Thomas Westley (b December 24, 1882) who would be referred to as West or Westley to distinguish him from his dad. …show more content…

On October 23, 1907 West married a girl he had known for 10 years, Alberta Rankin or affectionately Bertie. When his dad moved to Third Lake in 1898, a small lake near the north-eastern part of Blackstone Lake in which Bertie and her family had farms going back to 1889. Alberta had been born on her father’s farm one of the earliest settler births on the lake.
The marriage itself occurred in town on a dry 9°C day which is reasonably good for late in October in the district. The signs of winter were approaching as nearly all the trees had given up their leaves and just 4 days previously there were a few snowflakes, the first ones of the fall. As the bride was rather young, just 17, her age was deliberately not listed by Rev. Childerhose. There was a problem listing the grooms too as it was stated to be 23 shaving off a year. However, they did have plenty of witnesses and support. For the groom, West had his younger sister Ruth act as his witness and it was especially appropriate as she was good friends with Alberta and was just a day older. Also, Ruth and Alberta had attended the same school together until they were both 13, when Alberta last attended. The witness for Alberta was her uncle Art Jennings. As some of the Rankins were better off than many of the farmers, being the well known merchants of Foley a good reception was held. Samuel Rankin the head of the Rankin Brothers store bought a mantel clock as a wedding

Harriet Tubman’s birth name was Araminta Ross, and she kept that name until she changed it to Harriet upon adulthood, to honor her mother. She was born a slave on a plantation in Maryland, and lived through dreadful conditions until she escaped circa 1850.…
