President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam

Dinh Diem was born in 1901, and was son of a minister and councilor to a former emperor. He was the president of South Vietnam and was a former mandarin of the Nguyen dynasty. President Diem was the prime minister of State Vietnam. In 1955, Diem announced victory after a plebiscite. He imprisioned and murdered hundreds of Buddhists. He was assassinated in 1963 after religious protests and non-violent resistances.

Diem refused many invitations to serve as premier. He was held captive by Ho Chin Minh's communist Vie Minh. In 1950, Diem traveled to the United States to still french-ruled Vietnam. Diem was offered the post of interior minister in Ho's government, but Diem refused. Diem also refused to
