Dinh Diem was born in 1901, and was son of a minister and councilor to a former emperor. He was the president of South Vietnam and was a former mandarin of the Nguyen dynasty. President Diem was the prime minister of State Vietnam. In 1955, Diem announced victory after a plebiscite. He imprisioned and murdered hundreds of Buddhists. He was assassinated in 1963 after religious protests and non-violent resistances.
