Norma Jean Dougherty better known as Marilyn Monroe with her lover and photographer André de Dienes travelled to Malibu Beach in 1946. The future bombshell who would make the world dance at her feet posed for a series of photographs on the beach.
Remembering the photo series, Andre says though Marilyn had yet to see the sign post of success or get intoxicated by fame, there already was a shadow dimming the radiance of her face or the joy in her laughter.
Andre asked the 20 year old Marilyn to react to the words instinctively without pausing to think even for a second. The photo shoot went smoothly until Andre said “death”. When Andre said “Death”, Marilyn took a folded dark cloth and covered her head with it. Death to Marilyn was ‘nothingness’.
