Biochemistry Major: Personal Statement

Improved Essays
When I began my college career, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I was going to be a genetic engineer which is why chose to major in genetics and biochemistry. During the first year, it became clear/apparent that I was not enjoying any classes within my majors. I rationalized this away by saying that these were just introductory courses and once I got to the upper-level courses it would become more interesting to me. That never happened. The combination of lack of interest in my coursework and bad study habits left my grades in a major slump. So after my second year I was struggling and decided to drop the biochemistry major, which meant that I would need a minor to graduate. After perusing the undergraduate course catalog and evaluating …show more content…
Actually, I wanted to study neuroscience, but that was not offered as a major or a minor. So I settled for psychology. Luckily, the psychology department had a trained neuroscientist in the faculty, Dr.Simon-Dack, who teaches two neuroscience courses (I took both) and with whom I spent a year assisting with her research. This also led to an opportunity do a presentation at the Midwest Undergraduate Cognitive Science Conference. I eventually change my major to psychology, and I can honestly say that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It led to one of the most fulfilling periods of my life. But it was during this time that I realized I was close to finishing a general biology degree with no concentration in genetics. I only needed three more courses. For how much I had come to loathe those biology courses, I knew that I owed myself that degree. For three and half years I slogged through those courses, and I would not be able to forgive myself for not finishing. In the end, I graduated with degrees in psychology and biology. The psychology degree always felt like a labor of love. The biology degree felt like running a marathon. One thing I learned about myself from my experience in undergrad was my ability to …show more content…
At the time I was an AmeriCorps member working at the Cook County Justice Advisory Council learning firsthand about the intricacies of Cook County’s justice system. Daily I confronted the data on the justice system’s effect on individuals, families, and communities. After perusing the data, learning about the conditions that the youth detained there experience I finally saw it myself. In that moment, despair and sorrow overwhelmed. Since I was immersed in the data I knew so much about them. It was in that moment that I decided that I needed to do what I could to keep people out of there. Taking stock of my skills and what I care about led me to school psychology.

My goal is to become a licensed school psychologist working with CPS students disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline. And this interest in particular has led me to apply to this specific program. The emphasis on social justice is important to

The School to Prison Pipeline is something I was previously unaware of. Crystal T. Laura ’s Book, Being Bad: My Baby Brother and the School to Prison Pipeline (2014) was eye opening and disturbing. To learn that students of color, particularly male students, are being described at eleven years old as unsalvageable because of subjective behaviors is heartbreaking and infuriating. Most of all this book, the personal essay describing the story of Laura’s brother Chris, left me wondering why people, who chose the field of education as their profession, cannot commit to the vision of love, justice and joy in education that Laura describes in her book.…

Chicago is a beautiful, but broken city. The many museums tell the history of so many places in time but hide the fact that children in public schools are failing at an increasing rate. Navy Pier is walked down thousands of times a day, but people avoid neighborhoods with boards and bars on the windows. Thousands travel to Chicago to witness a Cubs baseball game, but no one speaks out on who shot a child during a drive-by shooting. Chicago is a great city for tourists to view the city, but a closer examination on the city reveals numerous views that tourist ignore.…

Throughout my research on the school to prison pipeline, I was able to identify where the main issues began and how it effects children as they grow up. There are certain policies and procedures that can be done to eliminate these issues that continue in the school systems. By setting up different recourses, this can eliminate the disparities among the students, and eliminate the harsh punishments that are set for these young adolescents. Within many schools, the use of harsh disciplinaries are set in place to control the minor infractions that the young adolescents create, but are these disciplinaries too harsh?…

Advice Dated as College Itself Let’s retire the exhausted mantra, “You need to go to college to be successful.” For many incoming freshman, four years of meticulous studying in high school have fallen short in helping to pick a major. While the world opens its arms to hard working high school graduates, many students have given little thought to a career path, while some are simply burnt out by school. Liz Freedman is the author of “The Developmental Disconnect in Choosing a Major”, an online article published on Penn State’s academic advisory journal “The Mentor.” In her article, Freedman cites a number of statistics such as the 20%-50% of students entering college as “undecided”, and the 75% of students who change their major at least once.…

I have been taking heavy course loads the past several semesters at 17 hours and It wasn’t until this past summer, I had a graduation check with Sara Olzawski and met with Dr. Thompson to find out that I was behind 16 hours of biology electives, because these classes I was told originally would count, did not. After finding this out, I scrambled to try and enroll myself in 16 hours of upper division biology electives before I graduated as well as finish my other requirements (my minor and major support credits). I took one of my lab courses last semester and have enrolled in the other 13 hours required to graduate this semester. I am concerned however, because my immunology class is one that I am struggling in, no matter how hard I am working, as I have A’s and B’s in all my other courses this term. I do not want to get to the end of this semester and not get my diploma, because of one 3-hour class that, in my opinion, I should have been correctly advised to take long before this past summer in case a situation like this occurred so that I could…
