Takemura’s The Manga Guide to Biochemistry offers a dual experience for the reader addressing two very intense and unlikely topics: biochemistry and anorexia. The author poses his messages about eating disorders to the reader in the form of the lighthearted story of a weight-loss-obsessed girl, her nerdy friend, and his attractive professor to teach the reader about the significance of metabolism and molecular biology on one’s health. The plot of this story is certainly cheesy. Its cliche romance of a shy boy pining after a cute girl is one of the most overused tropes in literature.
