Bio 499 Reflection Paper

Decent Essays
I, Lauren Wilson, am an EMT Captain Student EMS (SEMS). I am writing to you due to a statement that was made in one of my classes. BIO 189 is the introductory ASU course for all freshmen who are in the School of Life Sciences. I serve as a mentor to these freshman, through a different class BIO 499. Part of the requirements for BIO 499 is to attend BIO 189 lecture with our assigned mentees. These lectures are dedicated to introducing freshman to opportunities available at ASU and help them transition into college. The lectures usually involve small group discussions, and then one mentee from each group shares with the entire lecture what they discussed. One of the discussion topics was “What was your favorite class you have ever taken and why?”

Extracurricular activities can also help students apply classroom knowledge to real world situations. I’ve participated in many extracurricular activities that pertained to my interest in medicine, and because of this, I’m able to use my knowledge of science classes to hopefully pursue a career in the medical field. Since my lifetime goal is to change the world through medicine, my courses and extracurricular activities have helped me prepare for my chosen field of study. My courses I’ve taken and extracurricular activities I’ve participated in include AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology, and the purposeful walks sponsored by HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).…

I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

My experiences, academic background and personality are three key aspects of my life that make the medical field a preference and a particularly suitable field for me. My interest in medicine was first sparked when I volunteered at CentraState Medical Center working with geriatric patients. To further explore this interest, I joined the First Aid Squad in my town. Riding on ambulances and volunteering at the squad provided much-needed insight into the field and taught me valuable skills, such as patient care and effective communication. After completing a four-month intensive EMT course and state exam, I can proudly say that I am now a New Jersey certified EMT.…

Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

People have a tendency to learn different things for different reasons. Some individuals plan on becoming ballerinas and therefore must have knowledge on how to become more flexible and a basic understanding of motion to complete the stunts they do; however, for a person to become a professional photographer, the basis of knowledge has to be different. This goes for all professions. Although rugby and football appear similar, they each require some skill set or knowledge that the other has no use for. Learning different skills for no reason at all can be beneficial too.…

During elementary school my mother was working toward a masters degree in physical therapy. In preparation for tests and exams any time she caught me in front of the television, in the living room of our apartment, I became a studying tool and test subject. While watching Barney and Elmo reruns, my q-angles were measured and the endpoint of my ACL tested using the Lachman test. I tell you this because growing up in this environment I developed my interest in the human body and medicine. What excites me about this field of study is that it isn’t stagnant.…

Last Thursday, Lincoln arranged for an alumni member to come speak to the freshman class regarding careers and and opportunities. The Alumni member first began the speech with Lincoln pride. Lincoln pride is the passion that all of Lincoln students or graduates should all acquire if they have attended the institution. Also she then spoke on how you will come to college having your major in mind and maybe even what you may want to be when you graduate, although through experiencing and expanding your knowledge on all of the majors may cause you to switch majors which happens most often with freshman classes. She then began to explain to us her college experience and mentioned how she first entered school wanting to major in veterinary science…

Medicine fascinated me even when I was a child. I remember being about eight years old when my pediatrician asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Without hesitation, I told him I wanted to be a doctor. I view medicine as discovery, the chance to learn the science surrounding the human body and develop the skills that will allow me to heal others. As I entered college, I pursued experiences that exposed me to the world of medicine, becoming more involved within my community and university.…

In my first semester of college, I have been exposed to so much and I have learned so much. Learning Basic Medical Science has allowed me to learn a variety of new things that I had never even heard of before or done before like immunohistochemistry, solving case studies, and T1/T2 translational research. Immunohistochemistry was really interesting and complex. At first, I overlooked it because I thought it was my over my head and not applicable to me at the moment. Then, over time I noticed that we talked about it several class periods, so clearly it had some significance to us currently.…
