My intention for participating in this faculty led trip is to first experience and explore a new culture and second to learn more about something I have always enjoyed; marine life. I have always loved traveling and exploring, especially when it has a positive impact on other people or, in this case, an ecosystem filled with life. As a member of the QU Women's Soccer Team and an Athletic Training/Physical Therapy student, my academic and athletic schedule makes it very difficult to do any study abroad or service trips during the school year. When I saw this opportunity, I thought this trip would be a great way for me to be able to pursue my love of travel and making a differences without interfering with my busy schedule during the year and …show more content…
Outside of the classroom, I have always had an interest in marine life and believe this is an opportunity to further my knowledge of this vast and amazing underwater world.
I believe cultural learning is the best way to apply what is said in the classroom to the real world. After eye-opening service trips to places like Guatemala and Africa, I have learned that the most memorable learning comes from real life experiences as it inspires so many emotions, senses, and connections that it is impossible to forget. Cultural learning is also important to me as it allows me to have a greater understanding of what is truly happening in the world around me - it is one thing to read it on the news or in a book, it is quite another to see and experience it

I like to keep things organized and on task and moving, especially when an assignment must be done in a timely manner. I find this role as a leader is also displayed on the soccer field as I am a communicator. My optimal role when working with a group, however, is leading by example and doing what is best for the team/group. I seek to get the best out of my teammates/group members whether that means encouraging them to speak up or pushing them to be their best. I feel this role assumes an open communication and collaboration between group members in which I listen to all members to help lead us in the right direction towards an answer or an

Leadership doesn’t necessarily have to be grandiose or significantly impactful. It can be displayed more casually or in a school environment like in my US History class. My table was often rowdy, which can be a problem when there was group work to complete. As a result, I constantly found myself assigning tasks to different people and managing their progress. One of the tasks of a leader is to make sure everyone does their part to achieve the end goal.…

There are multiple ways I am a leader within my community. The main way I lead my peers is through sports. I have been on my different teams; volleyball, basketball, track, and softball have all given me the opportunity to build my character and to lead by example. I was the volleyball team captain for my junior and senior year, so many of the younger girls were looking up to me. The best way to lead is by your actions; I would always go hard in practices and games to show the underclassmen that in order to get the best results, you need to give it your all.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

The leading of a team or group is not a simple task but involves real life skills that take time, thinking and commitment. The role of leadership is an essential aspect of an organization since it can determine the difference between success and failure. “Although leaders are gifted in different ways, with different personalities and varying skill sets, all leaders can grow, become more skillful, and become more competent so that they can achieve greater effectiveness” (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014, pp. 10). At times, leadership may seem overwhelming and complicated, but by concentrating on specific fundamentals they will find that they can guide the team with the assurance and competence. The first thing that caught my attention this time is that, theories of counseling are also applicable to group counseling. I learned about the theories in my social work practice class last year.
