Bingo Nursing Home Assignment

Improved Essays
As my community assignment, I chose to attend bingo night amongst the elderly at a nursing home. From my experience, I was able to take new views on the elderly, more understanding on the reasons behind their certain behaviors, and knowledge of their daily lives as citizens in the nursing home. My experience held both things I had expected, yet many things which were unexpected to me before I went. My assumptions on certain things were proven wrong and I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn new information about a large group of our society that I was not fully familiar with prior to my visit. The Smithville Area Aging Office is in a state of emergency. The agency has refused to deliver services to Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender people, and now there’s a pending legal class action suit filed against the agency, its staff and its Board of Directors. Its federal and state funding has been frozen and the agency is forced to close since it solely relied on funding from federal and state to operate its services. The executive board consists of mostly people who have some type of affiliation with the Christian faith, but Smithville Area Aging Office is not a faith-based organization, so when the agency refuses services to Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender people, the organization discriminated against them as well as creating a situation…

The Blumberg’s Nursing Home (BNH) must hire professional, ethical staff members to care for the residents and provide support for the facility. Unfortunately, the inappropriate actions of a few employees have caused them to lose their jobs which place the nursing home in a predicament since they are now short staffed in vital areas. Maintaining a safe, law-abiding organization is essential, and in this instance, corrective measures would not suffice. Moreover, there are specific guidelines in place to ensure proper processes of the facility. Due to the premature termination, they were forced to put a staff nurse in the director of nursing position where they are not qualified which cause the nursing home not to be compliant with the federal…

For the past two years I have worked at a local retirement home in the dining room. Although the residents are not my patients, they still look for that personal connection. Once I took a few extra minutes out of my day to talk about a TV show with a resident. Now this may seem like a simple gesture, and truthfully it was, but to that resident is meant a whole lot more. At the end of our conversation, she told me that the past five minutes made her happy she got out of bed.…

Early this year, my grandmother became very ill and required around the clock attention. My family and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of physically, but we also wanted to make sure her meals were healthy and nutritious. Through word of mouth, I heard about the Meals on Wheels program that just happened to be in my county. I contacted the site manager and the next day, the agency started to deliver meals to my grandmother’s home. We were so grateful because we could concentrate on other things besides cooking.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

Upon starting my volunteering, however, I began to feel comfortable working with the patients and they felt comfortable with me. We broke the ice by standing in a circle and throwing a ball to each other. After a break, we gathered around a television and picked a movie to watch. It was incredibly difficult trying to pick one that wasn’t too intense for the patients, but we settled on a movie from the 1940s. The next day, I helped serve coffee and graham crackers to patients.…

In my opinion, having many “seniors” eating at McDonalds would improve the image they have. It shows that McDonalds is a cheap, fast food chain that is also willing to accommodate the elderly. McDonalds will get the reputation of giving the customers what they want, making it a main priority of theirs to keep the customers happy. Although this could improve the image, it does not mean it is easy to do.…

Elderly people have always held a special place in my heart, so I wanted to do my field work in a nearby nursing home that I had never visited. I set out to learn about the quality of life that elderly people had in the nursing home and what contributed to that quality, either good or bad. I called ahead to get permission to do this assignment and get access to various areas of the building.
