Leaky gut ALD is preceded by leaky gut, which is both directly and indirectly caused by alcohol consumption. Alcohol is fermented in the gut and produces acetaldehyde, which disrupts the tight junctions that hold the intestinal cells together (Llorente and Schnabl 2015). In addition to this, alcohol causes leaky gut by inducing inflammation (Chart 1). Alcohol and bacteria “cooperate” to cause inflammation of the bowel and the liver that causes the gut to become more permeable. Wang et al.…
Binge drinking is defined as four or more drinks in a row for women and for men, five or more. It is “estimated that nearly one third of college students qualify for a diagnosis of alcohol abuse, and 1 in 17 qualifies for a diagnosis of alcohol dependence; however, few students who drink at these high levels report that they are heavy or problem drinkers, and even fewer report that they have sought treatment or counseling for their drinking.” (Lenk, Erickson, Winters, Nelson, & Toomey, 2012)…
My friend drank a little bit and stopped, unable to take anymore. The thing was, I couldn't…
Increased alcohol consumption, over two standard drinks per day, seriously increases the risk of chronic illness, injury or death (NHRMC, 2009; AIHW, 2013). In 2010, 2.7% of Australasia’s disease burden was cause by alcohol use (AIHW, 2013). With a higher burden on the health care system, vital services are stretched to accommodate for risky drinkers, putting other patient’s health at risk. Although high levels of alcohol consumption have decreased since 2010, young adults are still more likely to consume alcohol at risky levels in a single situation; binge drinking (AIHW, 2013). An increase in high levels of alcohol use leads to greater risk of chronic illness, especially with long term exposure at high levels.…

Being a CJ major, I found chapter eights focus on deviance to be particularly interesting. Chapter eight had an interesting excerpt in regards to binge drinking on college campuses, binge drinking is also a big part of military culture as well, so my SOL post will be more geared towards binge drinking in the military since I’m a vet and can speak on that aspect pretty well. When you apply the sociological concepts of obedience, conformity, and deviance to binge drinking it begins to make sense as to why people engage in this activity. Obedience entails compliance with higher authorities in a hierarchal structure. Binge drinking in the military is something that’s not only promoted by peers but higher ups as well.…
French and Cooke (2012) both experts in the field of research have worked together to address the issue of binge drinking which is becoming increasingly normal among young adults and is defined as the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short space of time. Binge drinking has become the norm in the 21’s century and associated risks are often not looked at. Alcohol is one of the leading causes of preventable mortality in more economically developed countries. Alcohol consumption is also linked to motor accidents, inappropriate behaviour and violence (Mochdad, Marks, Stroup, & Gerberding, 2004). The study used Ajzen’s (1985, 1988, 1991) Theory of planned Behaviour (TPB) to understand binge drinking and the importance of beliefs…
Binge drinking. We have all heard of it whether from conversations or seen it in television and movies. Binge drinking has been around for a long time and shows no signs of disappearing any time soon. Binge drinking is prevalent on college campuses and even shows signs in high schools. The act of binge drinking is deemed as consuming four (females)/ five (males) or more alcoholic beverages in a span of two hours CDC.…
“STEP ONE: We admitted we were powerless over alcohol–that our lives had become unmanageable, “said in Alcoholics Anonymous, The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. In the United States our drinking age is 21, but in reality many people drink way before that. The drinking age should definitely not be lowered, but completely illegal for all because of the emotional distress it causes, the body damage it creates, and also the lives of human beings. First off, humans are very emotional. When a person has had too much to drink they become a different person than when they are sober.…
The two articles “Taking Up Binge Drinking in College: The Influences of Person, Social Group, and Environment” by Elissa R. Weitzman, Toben F. Nelson, and Henry Wechsler, and “Press Release from the Harvard School of Public Health” by Henry Wechsler and Elissa Weitzman, the audience for the two articles is researcher, professors, and college administrators and the purpose of the research studies is to have freshman college students not to drink like they do because it could kill them or get them hurt in many different ways. The purpose of the abstract is to identify person, social group, and environmental factors associated with uptake of binge drinking among a national sample of college students. The important information that this article tells the audience is that college students don’t need to drink as much and it also gives the audience more information on how people use and abuse alcohol among college students. A news article doesn’t an abstract because the abstract is apart of the summary, and not apart of a text.…
drinking. So many Americans are concerned about this problem getting worse, from the parents who think this can't happen to their perfect child, to students in school worried about falling under peer pressure. Everyone can agree that this is a problem, however, they all believe that this cannot and won't happen to someone they are close too. Actions need to be taken and solutions need to be made either way. Professor Ross Douthat as with many others know that binge drinking can be very dangerous, “it's linked to accidents, suicide, and increased violence”(Douthat par.…
Throughout the United States, lowering the drinking age is a huge discussion. Every American enjoys a drink or two with a friend as a social event. Why does the government feel a person who can be in the military isn’t mature enough to have a drink? Binge drinking is a huge issue among young adults who are not able to drink in a public place. Prohibiting these young adults from drinking will not make them stay away from alcohol.…
How binge drinking is a public health issue Sexual assaults, dangerous driving, crimes and bad health are often associated with binge drinking. The NIH reported that up to 50% of all sexual assault cases such as rape involve alcohol consumption of either the predator or the victim. predator (NIH, National Institute on Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism.) When an individual is under the influence of alcohol they are less controlled of their bodies, they are less aware of what is happening around them and people are more likely to take advantage of people. Alcohol can make many people sexually aroused and aggressive and therefore more likely to take out a sexual act.…
Alcohol has become increasingly accessible over the past two decades, increasing the injuries and deaths among society (about the campaign, n.d.). For the purpose of this essay, the definition of binge drinking is the consumption of five or more alcoholic drinks during a sitting, causing the consumer to become intoxicated (Tomsovic, 1974, as cited in Courtney, Polich, 2009). In the last 10 years there…
As warm weather is fast approaching, it is common for the news to report the benefits of staying hydrated. The article starts off with a personal experience of dehydration from the author. I think everyone has experienced the effects of dehydration at least once. These symptoms include headaches, dry and sticky mouth, loss of concentration and memory. The author compares it to feeling like a lead balloon.…
