The media plays an important role in most people’s lives, which is why it should be more diverse and include more genders. Entertainment should be easy to connect to—to put oneself in a virtual world that may be completely artificial but feels natural. Music is supposed to connect with individuals on a personal, often times on an emotional, level; video games are meant to make everyone feel like a hero; television shows, commercials, books, and magazines are supposed appeal to and represent everyone equally. With this influence and large audience, media is one of the best ways to introduce and reinforce the idea of different genders. Completely eliminating all gendered products may be too costly for companies, but introducing a new line of non-binary gendered products would target a larger audience. Including non-binary gendered products would benefit society greatly. If the media included non-binary characters and non-binary gendered products, more people would understand that there are different genders and be more accepting of these genders. They may even realize that they are not completely masculine or feminine but instead fall on the gender spectrum. Some companies were able to successfully include non-binary characters into their medium without relying on stereotypes. For example, as Richards et al mention, Facebook has allows one to customize their gender and pronouns in one’s basic information (97). Having a non-binary option in video games and other interactive forms of media shows that non-binary individuals exist and are worthy of their own option in that media form. This inclusion can be even more interwoven into that specific form of media. Undertale has been praised for its inclusion of non-binary characters. In fact, Quinn claims that much of the game’s success can be attributed to its deliberate use of gender-ambiguous characters and inclusive game play (1). The game features a main character of an unknown gender and has other characters that use they/them pronouns. This has sparked a debate about the true gender of these characters with some agreeing to accept the characters’ non-binary life. Bringing these discussions up may upset some, but they acknowledge the existence of many people and cannot be ignored forever.
