“I see what I see. What I don’t see, I don’t believe” (11). Billie Wind is a young Seminole girl who went to “Kennedy Space Center…” (11). For school and to learn and now has a scientific mind. She receives a punishment because she was “...too scientific and realistic like the white men” (11). Accordingly, she wants to prove the head of the Wind Clan, Charlie Wind, wrong to show that their tribal legends are fake. She goes on this journey because of the punishment and her character changes, which causes her to think differently. As a result, Billie Wind learns to believe in her tribal legends with her scientific thinking.
Billie Wind’s character and thoughts change throughout her journey. To begin with, she receives the punishment due to her sister, Mary Wind, told on her. Billie wants “...answers not legends…” (11), because she was “..always curious..” (11). She uses her scientific thinking to understand the world around her and how it works. After, she heads to the Everglades and is thrown off by an alligator and heads west instead of south to “Lost Dog Island…” (4). Though, when she finally reached land, she heard an owl hooting at her, “Ho!... Ho...HO, HO” (24). She talks back to the owl, “If that talk is owl, then I’m an owl, too. HOHOHO” (24). At first, she only used science to make sense of the world around her and how it worked. Though, this changes over time: she realizes the animals do talk, and she realizes how the legends do sense. When she comes back, she has evolved into a greater person and thinking scientifically and realistically. As can be seen, Billie Wind’s tribal legends now make sense to her, as she applies her scientific mind to
