Conflicts/Conflict Resolution: One of the conflicts of the story was the strained relationship between Billie Jo and her father. The relationship became strain after the death of Billie Jo’s mom, due to the fact she blamed him for leaving out the kerosene can that caused the fire that killed her mother. Their relationship mends after Billie Jo realizes she belongs home and her father meets her at the train station after running away. She states in the story that, “I am forgiving him, step by step, for the pail of kerosene.” Another conflict in the story was Billie Jo feeling that she needed to leave her home and the dust behind. Eventually she runs away, but realizes, “Getting away, it wasn't any better.” This resolved the conflict because she realized she needed to return home. There was also a conflict Billie Jo faced in the fact that her hands were badly burned in the fire that killed her mom, this caused her to not be able to play the piano anymore due to the pain saying, “I don't say, it hurts like the parched earth with each note.” This conflict is eventually resolved when the doctor tells her towards the end of the story that if she does use the fingers they will be just fine and work again.
