People from both sides react in different ways. The south slowly realizes all the hardships do not end because the war is over. Thoughts of revenge are first in many minds the north is celebrating the victory and plotting to “make the south pay” the monetary cost of the war. Lincoln is glad that the war is over. His plans are for a unified United States again. Washington DC is celebrating the end of the war. Union supporters expect harsh punishment for the South it does not come. The terms of surrender are very lenient and too easy for the Southern people. Lincoln was out in Washington looking at all of the damage that had been done. Then he went back to the White house. Many people were waiting out on the front lawn for Lincoln to give his speech but he never did. He was actually inside writing one of the last speeches he would ever address to the American people. Two days after surrender Lincoln gives a speech to the people he realizes what he is telling the crowd is not what they want to hear. Lincoln talks about giving freedom to blacks and those who fought for the union. The crowd is not encouraged by what they are hearing. He tells the how difficult it was going to be to rebuild and rejoin the United States. The war is over! “After 4 long years, and more than 600,000 dead” (111) Celebration fills the air. This book does a great job keeping the reader what will happen next. If you aren’t into to history this book wouldn’t be for you. It has lots of dates in the beginning and kind of drags a little before it will get good. However, if you stay with it and keep reading it gets much better. The book has strong points but it also hits it lower points and it doesn’t seem as interesting. With any book you will run into that problem. When reading the book at some parts you honestly are so into it you don’t really know what going on around you. This book isn’t for children at all. They would have a very hard time getting to it and really understanding what exactly is going on. This book would be best for a middle schooler or high schooler that has learned this history. Some might think that this book would be pointless to read if they have already learned it. However, this book gives so much more detail than you would have learned from high. It is a guarantee that you will learn more from this book than you could ever
