Bill James 'Baseball Abstract'

Decent Essays
So sadly baseball is not what it used to be. We can no longer rely on Runs Bated In (RBI), or even Home Runs (HR) to see how effective a batter is, and we cannot simply use Earn Run Average(ERA) and Strikeouts(K) to judge how good a pitcher is. You see, around 1977, this guy named Bill James wrote a book call Bill James’ Baseball Abstract”, and it changed everything. Over the first few years the book was out, it became increasingly popular with scout and GM. It was a lot easier for them to analysis a players stats so they could quickly determine whether or not they could make it in the big leagues. With the creation of calculations such as BABIP (Batting average on balls in play), ISO(Isolated Power), and OPS(On base percentage + Slugging

Even though Chris Davis has a better BB/K and wOBA Not in Play then Adam Jones, the fact that he puts so many fewer balls into play hurts him. This analysis does make two questionable assumptions. It presumes that Adam Jones will hit the same proportion of pitches in the strike zone or not in the strike zone if he makes contact less frequently and it also presumes that his production when he does make contact won’t increase if he makes less frequent contact. At least the first assumption is highly unlikely while the second one is plausible.…

The player that I think has the most team-friendly contract is Edwin Encarnacion. This last off-season he left the Blue Jays to sign with the Indians for a 3 year 60-million-dollar contract. While it is a big contract one thing that makes this unique and beneficial to the team is the Indians have a 4th year option to keep him if they wanted to and having that kind of long term flexibility is an advantage every team can use. His last 5 season with Toronto make him worth his contract. Each year he was either named to the all-start team or at the very least a top 15 MVP candidate.…

    Essay On Sabermetrics

It's easy to get caught up in the numbers, but it’s occasionally necessary. Sabermetrics, originally defined as “the search for objective knowledge about baseball”, is an approach that often uses statistical analysis instead of traditional measures like RBIs, home runs and pitcher wins. However, using sabermetrics to analyze baseball isn’t always accepted because it doesn’t tell the entire story. For so-called “stat geeks”, the Kansas City Royals were a symbol of sabermetrics the last two seasons. However, a little more than a month into the 2016 season, the Royals haven’t lived up to the offensive precedents they set in the in the two years prior.…
