The big break for Microsoft came in 1980 when IBM approached them for a new BASIC operating system for its new computers. In the early 1980s IBM was by far the leading PC manufacture. While a degree in business or anything relating to the field may be useful, it is not necessary to start a business. And for some people, going to college with the long term goal of having their own business is not the best option. There are over a hundred entrepreneurs who succeeded without a college degree. An example of one of these entrepreneurs is Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark. His business is well known for its greeting cards and although he passed away decades ago the brand remains well known and booming. It is the largest greeting card business in the United States to be specific, and the founder never even went to college. What is useful when starting a business, however, is the money to do so. Using the money that would be spent in college for startup capital can be a smart decision for aspiring entrepreneurs. It is one of the fields where education does not matter as much as product. What a person can do has more value than what a person knows when it comes to starting a business. If someone has the drive and talent, taking the step to get the business started without waiting all those years to graduate from college can be a great decision. Going to college in search of validation or permission to set those ideas in motion is a waste of time.…

One example is Richard Branson. According to Drake Baer from Business Insider, Branson originally started in the record business, but quickly got involved in other fields and is now the founder of the 400 companies in Virgin Group, which just so happens to also be launching people into space. Obviously, Branson did not spend 10,000 hours practicing to become a founder of 400 companies or someone from NASA. Branson simply had the natural talent and determination to become a successful businessman. Another famous example is Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. According to the article, “20 Successful Entrepreneurs with No Experience”, by Annie Pilon on small business trends website, Colonel Sanders had no restaurant experience before starting what would become K.F.C. He started in the restaurant business only because he was running a local service station in Kentucky, and his chicken immediately gained attention from the people. Colonel Sanders did not spend 10,000 hours working in the restaurant business or perfecting his fried chicken recipe, but was able to effectively create one of the most successful fried chicken restaurants in the world by simply giving people great tasting…

Like John Gatto said in his insightful article “Against School”, when someone is educated, it doesn’t necessarily mean they went through twelve painful years of school, nor does success automatically mean that you went through them. Success means that you worked hard to get to the top, and yes that can mean school for some people, but not all of them. And being educated can mean you’re knowledgeable, but not exclusively because of school.…

There are many debates concerning why people are educated. Is it because they are forced? Is it because they feel like it is the right thing to do? Is it because they want to make a lot of money?
