In “How a Democrat Killed Welfare” by Premilla Nadasen we read about Bill Clinton, former Democratic President of the U.S. and how while in office, he essentially destroyed welfare in the U.S. Firstly, I just wanted to say that I was very surprised that this article was in the course packet, considering that this is a sociology class; and I’d assume most if not all sociologists are Democrats. I found it surprising to see an article slamming Democrats. After Clinton was elected in 1992, many people breathed a sigh of relief as they thought the the horrors of the Reagen-Bush era were over.…

Olivia Plunkett Mr. Reader Impeachment 27 April 2015 After the Watergate scandal, former President Nixon was brought up on impeachment charges due to his involvement in the scandal. Many citizens called for the removal of Nixon from office, and he was brought up on impeachment charges, but resigned before there were any trials. According to the Constitution, a president “shall be removed from office for, and on conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Under these terms, I believe that the accusations against President Nixon were impeachable crimes due to not having the interest of the citizens in full mind.…

Committed to establishing American control in the Western Hemisphere and opening new trade routes to Asia, Roosevelt oversaw the building of the Panama Canal and the addition of the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. By establishing the US as a major world power, other countries were less likely to interfere or challenge the United States. As that was the case, the Progressives did not have to worry about foreign issues and could concentrate on furthering their movement. Also, by making the US a world power, it made the federal government stronger, meaning that Roosevelt could now help the Progressive movement advance even more. So, if Roosevelt never ended up as president, he would have never made the United States a world power, and without that power the Progressives would not have gotten that far in their…

Clinton's presidency was a seemingly long hard road. During his second term as President, He was impeached due to charges of lying under oath to a grand jury and obstruction of justice. However, the real underlying reason for the impeachment was Clinton’s denial of the Lewinsky Affair. The public opinion of the Lewinsky Affair allowed the Republican party to create a political strategy to use against Clinton. “Contending that Clinton had committed perjury, Republican leaders made the affair the centerpiece of their quest to defeat Democrats in the 1998 congressional elections” (Jansson, 2012,p.398).…

A majority of the public though, continued to side with the democrats, believing that although he most definitely lied about his oath, they felt as if the lies did not matter as much because the situation did not directly affect the Nation’s well being.
