Bilingual Outreach Analysis

In my role as the Bilingual Outreach Coordinator for San Benito County, I’m tasked with the responsibility to recruit, train, and retain an active high school poll worker database (over 150). The database is used to employ poll workers, surveyors, interpreters, and outreach volunteers. Unfortunately, there is not enough known about best practices in this area, and there is no uniformity throughout the programs. Often outreach work consists of trial and error.
I’ve found over the past years that long-term relationship building with community-based organizations is the most effective approach. This may include relationship-building with churches, nonprofits, and schools. Given the background of my audience, I developed an appropriate community-based

Rodriguez grew up in a Spanish speaking family thriving and eager to expand his education and vocabulary in the “loud, booming with confidence” English language. According to Rodriguez, bilingual educationists have strong disbelief in the idea that schools should be assimilated with bilingual education because the students lack “a degree of ‘individuality’” This sense of individuality is absent in public society because often your heritage sets you apart from most others around you.…

Rodriguez argues that it is essential to speak the public language in order to connect with your public identity. Without having knowledge of the public language there is no possible way to know your public identity and who you are in the community. This argument is explained more in the essay “Their English voices prying loose, my ties to my other name,....” (22) As Rodriguez loosens his ties on his english after holding it in for so long he begins to become more comfortable with the public English speakers surrounding him.…

It also made me appreciate organizations like Communities in Schools that provide for the needs of children that are outside of the classroom, but that nonetheless impact their classroom behavior. If children are stressed out about their home life or financial situation or if they are hungry and malnourished they suffer for it in the classroom. For these reasons, it is important to address each child’s situation case by case and to try to get a better understanding of how outside circumstances influence…

I credit the development of my personal values to my caring family and Cuban culture. My family was blessed with earning entrance into America through the Diversity Visa lottery in 1998. My father was a factory worker in the countryside when he began his personal rebellion against communism. He spent a year's gathering materials and hand building a house for him and my mother to move into, postponing their marriage until the project was finished, just to have it taken away by the regime. Emigrating to the U.S. was overall a difficult operation, especially as a first generation from my family to do so.…

The great opportunity that I have with my subject is that I get to teach them about the Latino culture and 98% of my students are Latinos. I feel this is a great opportunity to teach my students to feel proud of their Latino culture and the great advantages they have by being bicultural. For those students who are not Latino, I teach them to appreciate other cultures and to feel conformable around their peers. Besides, I always ask them to share something about their culture and compare it to the Latino culture. Many times they come to discover that both cultures share a lot in common.…

Jennifer, Our campus is a bilingual campus and even though I do not teach bilingual, our team works very closely with our 3rd grade bilingual classroom collaborating and planning to ensure all students receive proper instruction. I love that our ELLs receive instruction with the direction in their native language. Being a bilingual campus allows our bilingual parents to feel more comfortable on campus as well as building relationships with the faculty and staff. What a great idea for all ELL students to have the opportunity to go to the summer program that specifically aims to enrich their English learning experience and enhance their academic literacy. Our district provides a summer nutrition program for all students but what a great idea…

Bilingual advertisements. Bilingual advertisements are particularly useful in mobilizing and attracting immigrants, as many of them do not speak English, especially those from Spanish speaking countries. Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act is a piece of legislation that most immigrants, perhaps even most Americans, are unfamiliar with. It states that if over five percent (or 200,000 persons) in a political subdivision are a minority language group, then election materials in their native language, as well as oral assistance, must legally be provided to them (“Minority Language Citizens”). If voting eligible immigrants were aware of this fact, then voting rates among them could potentially skyrocket.…

Statistics show that the Mexican-American race has the highest number of people that populate the United States, and this demographic continues to grow even more. A Mexican-American is an American of full or partial Mexican decent. My parents, both born in Mexico, migrated to the United States in search of a better future for themselves and children. Because of my Hispanic roots, and my birth in the U.S., I am considered a Mexican-American. As a result of my equivalent exposure to two different cultures, I grew up being bilingual.…

Competency 7: Assess with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations and Communities. While working with clients, it is extremely important for an assessment to be done in the beginning of the relationship. This assures the social worker that the work being done is what the client feels is the most important for them to work on. Assessments should continue to be done throughout the helping-relationship. In modern society, English transcends its native countries and has become one of the most prominent language for communications all around the globe. For all humans, communications plays a huge role in life. The United States is so strongly monolinguistic, it has never had a need to learn and appreciate other foreign languages. The question that will be investigated is, “Is bilingual or non-bilingual students independent on intelligence?” Several studies, such as Bialystok et al; Oller, Pearson & Cobo-Lewis, 2007 contributed to better understanding of the cognitive development in bilingual and monolingual children. The results also showed that monolingual and bilingual children performed equivalently on a test of fluid intelligence but monolingual children obtained higher scores than bilinguals on a test of English receptive vocabulary. This study has presented useful information on bilingual and monolingual people. This investigation was interesting because i’m bilingual and I was curious to know if bilingual kids did have a better memory recall than monolingual…

In chapter 8 it discussed a reason why we have to teach a balanced bilingual curriculum in the classroom. The textbook “Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism” by Colin Baker expressed the cognitive theories of bilingualism and the curriculum. There are three theories that make up the cognitive theories for bilingualism; The Balance Theory, The Iceberg Analogy, and The Thresholds Theory. Within the Iceberg Analogy it broke town the 6 parts of the Common Underlying Proficiency. Also within the chapter the book did a great job of discussing the distinctions between basic interpersonal communicative skills (BICS) and cognitive/academic language proficiency (CALP).…
