Media Critique This paper will explore the article “Preschool programs face challenge of preparing staff to teach English learners” by Sarah Tully. This article was published on December 10, 2015 on the website EdSource. Thus as the title of the article indicates, this paper will be talking about the challenges of preparing staff on how to teach children that are English language learners. As well this article looks at the effects that the educator has on the children when they don’t share the same language. Thus in this article Tully is trying to shown the benefits that’s bilingual educators can have children as discusses the need for correct strategies to teach English language learners.

1).” Therefore this statement is included in “the states preschool standards, but Head Start and the California State Preschool Program- which support thousands of students – doesn’t require teachers to be bilingual, making it hard to reach that goal (pg. 1).” Thus if the issue is that teachers aren’t prepared on how to teach ELLs, the programs need to provide the teachers and assistants with the correct tools so children can grow into the English language. Tully states that “for English learners under age 5, bilingual teachers are a critical asset in prompting their school readiness (pg. 2).” Therefore if the answer to the problem is educators learning a new language than why isn’t it being done? As stated in the article “that the ability to speak another language is important for a lot of thing. But it alone does not guarantee that (the teaching) is linguistically appropriate or pedagogically sound and strong (pg.2).” Therefore I agree with the statement just because you can speak another language doesn’t mean that you will be able to teach others how to correctly learn it. However educators still need to learn another language because it beneficial for the children to have support in their native language. Although the problem in California is that the “number of early education worker who speak other languages hasn’t kept pace with the large number of young children who are learning English (pg.2).” Therefore there are a number of educators that can help the children just that they are outnumbered by the growth of students. Also “adding to the problem is that many workers who do speak languages other than English were based in home and daycare center jobs, rather than serving as preschool teachers or directors (pg.3).” Thus these two programs in California need to do what’s best for the children and that is to provide them with educators that have some knowledge in their native
