We traveled all around Florida, staying in hotels, working seven days a week, ten to twelve hour days. The work was difficult and extremely tiresome, but once I saw my first paycheck, I realized another reason why all the blood, sweat and tears were worth it. Unfortunately, nobody was making any money because you also had to make sure the person signing the petition was registered to vote and that all of their information was completely accurate. If the person wasn’t registered to vote, you didn’t get paid for that signature. Once we left California, we headed to Missouri.
That was a three day drive, and in the beginning of February, so it was pretty cold. At one point on the road, our window had completely frozen over, and when something hit it, it shattered and glass flew in at us. My boyfriend (Josh) and myself had a blanket to protect us, but it was extremely cold after that. We stayed in Missouri for a total of six days before Josh and I looked at each other and decided to go home for a bit.
We had been non-stop working for three months, and we were drained.
After about a month or two of staying in Florida, we got word of a petition in Arizona going for six dollars a signature! That was higher than we had ever seen it. Josh and I made it for the last two weeks of the campaign, and between the two of us, made over four thousand dollars.
After Arizona, we all piled into a short blue bus and headed to Ohio.
