Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins is asked to go on an adventure planned by Gandalf, Thorin and thirteen dwarves to recover stolen riches of Thorin’s grandfather from the dragon Smaug. Throughout the adventure, they encounter many friends and foes. For example, trolls are blocking their way and threaten to eat the dwarves, but the dwarves are then saved by Gandalf. As they approach the misty mountains, they are kidnapped by goblins while resting. While trying to escape from the goblins, the dwarves and Gandalf are captured but Bilbo is left behind in the tunnels. While attempting to find his way out, Bilbo finds a ring and meets Gollum. In this encounter with Gollum, he learns the ring is very powerful and makes the wearer invisible. He then uses it to help him escape, and continue on the adventure. As they travel through Mirkwood, Bilbo learns about the powers of the ring. for example, Bilbo uses the ring to save the dwarves and finds that it makes him feel weak when taken off. They pass through Lake-town, where Thorin is recognised as the King. They then continue onto the Lonely Mountain to slay Smaug. Smaug is then slain and they regain the treasure but Thorin steals the ring and claims the treasure for himself. Gandalf and Bilbo then retaliate against Thorin to steal back the ring and claim a share of the treasure. Thorin fights back but does not succeed and the story is concluded when Bilbo returns to Hobbiton with the ring and a fourteenth of
