Bilbo began to stall the trolls in hopes that Gandalf or day break would help save him and the dwarves. Gaining wisdom and knowledge for survival helped Bilbo grow. Bilbo had no idea what to do when they first started the journey but he started his path to figuring things out with the trolls. Bilbo comes face to face with golem and must figure out how to trick the creature and escape. He must do a battle of wits and play a game of riddles with golem. “It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt, It lies behind stars and under hills, And empty holes it fills, It comes first and follows after, Ends life, kills laughter.” (Tolkien). He outsmarts golem in the game of riddles and steals his magical ring from under the creatures nose. After he obtains his magical ring Bilbo began to use its power to turn him invisible to great use. He used it to escape the goblin cave and get away from golem. Bilbo turns invisible and steals the keys to rescue the dwarves from the elves. He uses the invisibility to get to the watch tower and help Thorin fight off the second wave of orcs. Bilbo put his ring to good use by using it smartly to sneak around and save all of his companions. Not only was growing in intelligence during the trip but also his wisdom. Companionship is one of the biggest changes in characters during novels and movies, any story really. Bilbo gained trust and friendship during his travels with the dwarves as expected. They all talked and enjoyed their time together during the first part of the journey. One dwarf, Thorin did not take as well to the hobbit as the rest did. Tolkien had created the feeling that the king did not take well to the hobbit because he could not stand for himself during journey. The king does not show any signs of friendship to Bilbo until after the hobbit saves his life. The group becomes close and shares stories and listens to one another after Bilbo does this deed. The group stands up for Bilbo when Thorin gets angry and tries strangle him for keeping the kings jewel. Tolkien shows exactly how close Thorin and Bilbo become when Bilbo keeps the jewel to protect Thorin.
