In the book The Hobbit, Tolkien incorporates topics that relates to other pieces of literary work, specifically the topic/theme of how no matter someone's background anyone can achieve something that they set their mind to. A text that relates to this topic is the the poem Can I? Why Not? written by Liam Francis. In both texts the idea of achieving a goal is covered. In the novel The Hobbit, the main character Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit that lives in a hole, when one day Gandalf appears and persuades him to join a group of dwarves on a journey to reclaim Erebor. During their quest Bilbo discovers that even though he may just be a hobbit (a member of an imaginary race similar to humans, of small size and with hairy feet, in stories by J. R. R. Tolkien)

According to the text, “Somehow the killing of this giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark […] made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath,” (Tolkien 156). This quote reveals how even though Bilbo may only be a hobbit he overcame this challenge and set his mind to achieving his goal which ultimately led him killing the spider. This quote connects to the poem because they both share a similar theme of achieving goals. In the poem, the author writes about how society may crush your dreams but people must to overcome this “societal norm” of being what you are expected to be. The poem states, “Through all the negativity and what society breeds in us We’ve all asked our self can I become? But if the question or dream seems to big to someone else The tell you that it can’t be done,” (Francis). This quote reveals how even though you may only be expected to meet certain standards and you may not be seen as someone who can accomplish something you can do
