Compare And Contrast Bilbo And The Hobbit

Great Essays
Many people have asked me what I think of when I hear the word hero. Some people think of superheroes, such as Batman, Superman or Spider Man. However, heros can be normal people without super hero powers such as teachers, parents, and coaches. Just like Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien, I too had heros help me in my life. Bilbo and I both have people in our lives that helped us achieve the impossible. Along the way both Bilbo and I evolved into heros. Gandalf, my parents, and my coach all share heroic traits and even some differences in the way they helped Bilbo Baggins and I in our adventures.
Gandalf and my parents share similar and different ways in which they helped Bilbo and I in our adventures. Gandalf states to his group,

When I first joined my club soccer team I was obviously not as good as the other players on my team. They were all so skilled, quick, and precise, and i was just average. My old club team did not have the amazing coaches that my new club team had so I felt like the underdog. Bilbo was considered the underdog by his fellow group members as well. His groups was filled with experienced adventurers and fighters and he was just an average Hobbit. Or so he thought. Since Gandalf kept his faith in Bilbo throughout the whole novel, he became a force to be reckoned with. So with a lot of practice and help from my coach I was able to catch up and surpass other teammates just like Bilbo did in his group. Gandalf states,” My dear Bilbo!” he said. “Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were.” (Tolkien 302) I think this is really powerful because even Gandalf sees the Hobbit Bilbo has become. Unlike myself, Bilbo was left on his own when Gandalf left for unknown reasons and Thorin was taken leaving Bilbo as a leader. My coach has not left me to defend for myself yet. He is at practice with me, on the sidelines and he always a call away. Next year will be a whole new adventure for me. I will be playing for a whole new team in college which means I will have a new coach and new teammates. Bilbo was able to step up and be a leader when he had too and I hope to be …show more content…
Christopher Reeve, an American actor who played Superman, stated “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and ensure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. This quote is amazing because I do not think a lot of people realize that they can be a hero. Like Christopher Reeve stated, Bilbo and I too had to find strength to persevere and ensure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. For example when Bilbo ran into Gollum and defeated him and still got away from the Goblins ,and when I proved everyone wrong and committed to a D1 college. Nobody thought I could do it. They did not think i had the skills and the heart to be a Division 1 athlete. But I did not let what they were saying get to me. I knew I had the heart and the skills to play and I was going to play no matter what it took. On page 92, Bilbo just escaped from the Goblins and he was on his way to find his group again when he overheard his group talking about him. They said, “ He has been more trouble than use so far”. “If we have have got to go back now into those abominable tunnels to look for him, then drat him, I say” (Tolkien 92). Despite what they said about him, Bilbo kept his head up and proved them wrong. Bilbo and I share differences in the way we helped ourselves to become our own heros. In the beginning of the story Bilbo was someone who was easily frightened but now he has grown much bolder in his adventure especially when he confronts Gollum. For example in chapter two when the trolls have taken the dwarves hostage Bilbo doesn’t try to help him for he is too scared. This is shown when he tells Thorin, “‘It’s trolls!’ said Bilbo from behind a tree. They had forgotten all about him” (Tolkien 39). The quote demonstrates Bilbo’s timidity as he pushes the responsibility of saving the dwarves to Thorin.…

Bilbo does use strength on his journey, but more often he makes use of his cleverness and trickery to escape conflicts such as the run in with the trolls, being captured by the goblins, and also being captured by the Elves of Mirkwood. Whereas Thorin is capable of muscling his way out of these problems and tends to do so. Bilbo is a small hobbit who lives a calm life without the need for strength. Thorin is a mighty dwarf who can bring even the strongest of orcs to their knees. When the company of dwarves and their burglar, Bilbo, were captured by the Goblins of the Misty Mountains, the two heroes had different means of escaping their ruthless foes.…

In the beginning of the book, Tolkien uses vivid descriptions to give us a view inside of Bilbo's life, and to briefly show readers his hobbit hole located in Middle Earth. Tolkien writes in page 1, “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit... It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” His hole is symbolized as a place of comfort, similar to our comfort in our own homes. In chapters six and seven, Bilbo comes to an understanding of the rings power and becomes adept of the ring and masters its use. When retelling the story of how he escaped from the goblins and Gollum, Bilbo fails to mention the ring and keeps it a secret. The other dwarves begin to respect him after he tells his tale; their growing respect differs from the attitude they had toward Bilbo at the beginning of the story, when they only tolerated him for Gandalf's sake. After the group resumes their adventure, Bilbo notices his hunger and suffers a long way.…

In The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Gandalf plays the mentor archetype because he is full of wisdom, has experience from many treacherous journeys , and is a superb leader. The mentor archetype in the Hero’s journey (In this case, Bilbo’s hero's journey) is the hero or initiates teacher figure who often guides them through the journey by giving them advice, information, wisdom, etc. One of the many marks of a good mentor is experience, and in The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, it is made known that Gandalf has lots of it. Bilbo, who hardly ever left his town, even knew of Gandalf past adventures.…

When the dwarves dropped Bilbo in the dreaded tunnels of the goblin-infested Misty Mountains they thought that they would never see him again. However, that assumption was quite wrong seeing as Bilbo made it out of the Misty Mountains alive and healthy. By doing so, Bilbo proved that he was no useless hobbit anymore. He also earned great respect from his companions, “The dwarves looked at him with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards, jumping over Gollum, and squeezing through” (Tolken 104). Before this incident the dwarves had really doubted whether Bilbo was worth taking along, but Gandalf had convinced them to bring him.…

Gandalf’s advisement for Bilbo to join the journey was the best decision possible for the destiny of the dwarves.
