The Hobbit The Hobbit is a novel that tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a small hobbit on a big adventure. At the beginning of the novel, Bilbo is living a comfortable lifestyle until he finds himself going on the adventure of a lifetime. Throughout the adventure Bilbo shows strong acts of bravery and composure. Everyone should read this book because the overall message resonates with readers, that small people are capable of big things. A powerful moment for Bilbo is when he saves everyone from the giant spiders. He feels more confident and that he is now officially a part of Thorin and co.. Right after Bilbo kills his first spider, “ He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach.”(144).

He faced a dragon in order to obtain something that wasn’t his, and wasn’t important to him. As Bilbo entered the dragon’s lair, the book narrates,”It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from here was the bravest thing he ever did.” (197). After he snooped around for a bit trying to find the treasure, Smaug opened his eyes. Bilbo didn’t run from the situation, but faced it. When Smaug talked to him, Bilbo responded. When Bilbo and Smaug start talking, the book narrates,” No dragon can resist the fascination and of wasting time trying to understand it”(205). Bilbo was talking to the dragon to waste time so he could get the arkenstone. This inspires the reader because he didn’t talk to the dragon because the dwarves told him to, or because he wanted to get exclusive information from the dragon, but he only did it to waste time. Throughout the novel Bilbo grew as a character, and really represented the message of the novel, that a small person is capable of big things. Bilbo walked into the an adventure that he wasn’t sure he was capable of going on, yet he proved that he was capable of being the hero.
