Caleb Richey 11-23-15 Ancient Art 101 Professor Sandra Johnson Jade Cong: Bowers Museum The Jade Cong is a detailed piece of art that is composed of two different colors—a grey and a green sort of color (jade). The green section of this piece is circular with a square area on the sides of the “Cong”. In addition, this circular section of the piece represents the heavens while the square part represents the planet Earth. This is a solid piece of art that is about an inch thick and fully designed with many lines and circles that sort of represents faces.…
A recurrent theme in ancient artifacts is animal symbolism. Both the Kunz Axe and the Tlingit Armor feature animal symbolism and rare materials (jade and Chinese coins, for example). This helps one determine what was valued in the culture, which animals one would want to borrow strength from, which objects one would use to show rank. Despite these artifacts coming from different cultures (the Olmec and Tlingit Indian cultures respectively), these pieces share many similarities in concept and dedication.…

Two Women walked past me, and purchased my mother's white puffy wedding dress, that I thought would one day be endowed to me, for as little as nothing. Watching with teary eyes the now empty living room, I knew that my parents were serious about leaving Persia and moving to an unpopular destination, China. rooted in persian culture and courtesy, with a limited view of the world, at only eight years of age, never could have I imagined the events, and experiences that future had in store for me. Driving from the airport to my new home through the hustling, bustling streets of Beijing, I was filled with excitement as I saw through the window the passing lights, tall buildings, and copious bicycle riders. Nonetheless my excitement soon subsided when I faced a language barrier when trying to play and…
This body of work was inspired by two things: my fascination with wearable art (such as the pieces created by artists, jewelers or costume designers like Debra Hampton, Rob Elford, Katie Hovencamp, Jeffrey Dever, Melinda Risk, Sandra Wilcoxon, Alexander McQueen or Bob Mackie), and my interest in the rituals that are used by different religious cultures, whether they are monotheistic, polytheistic, centered in animism, or based solely upon plant-induced visionary experiences. I have always felt most drawn to spiritual relationships that are based in nature, such as those used by adherents of Native American or Wiccan belief systems. At the same time, I am attracted to the proceedings and the sacred objects that are used for Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish, and many other religious ceremonies.…
Art has played an important role in human culture for ages; even before the term “art” exists. In the essay “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean questions about the universal definition of “art”, and examines “the consequences of identifying art in societies where such a concept did or does not exist” (p. 26). As the title of the article suggests, the term “art” provokes many discussions and questions. Although we have known the term “art” probably since we are in kindergarten, many of us neglect the profoundness of this simple term. Dean starts off by pointing out that “art” is an ambiguous term because of the differences in people’s aesthetic.…
Vietnamese Art In ancient Vietnam, art was more than something pretty to look at, it was a part of everyday life. Pottery from as early as 8,000 BC has been found in recent archeological dig sites in Bac Son, Vietnam (“History of…”). The pottery found was most likely used for cooking or holding water. Pots and jars did not have a lot of design, mostly geometrical patterns from the woven patterns used to make the jars.…
Death is inevitable and the customs that follow one 's death are representive of the beliefs and shared religion of that society. Through the scope of this paper I will discuss the death rituals and tomb burial practices of both Ancient Egypt and Ancient China. Over the examination of Ancient Egypt and Ancient China burial practices we begin to understand the complex thought process of respecting the dead, Furthermore, even though both of these civilizations have individually intricate beliefs we can also see the similarities in their ideals and rituals used to honor the dead and afterlife. These societies performed rituals for their deceased by using key components such as symbolic material objects buried alongside the dead, elaborate decoration…
It was a friend’s house, and when I entered, my head was on a full swivel as I tried to take in all that was around me. The ornate Buddha in the corner looked similar to what I had seen on the cover of books; the neatly folded and piled blankets for meditation were in the corner; the faint smell of incense was coming from all corners of the room. To me it seemed like all these stereotypes in my head were all present in this one little house. I felt a weird sense of home there, because I recognized a lot of the Asian decorations in the house, but at the same time I felt so out of place because I only understood that decoration as an aesthetic entity. I realized how close and, at the same time, how far I am from my Asian culture because I grew up as an adopted…

While reading “The Jewelry,” I found it to be an interpretive style of fiction. Maupassant’s primary goal is not only to entertain the readers, but to engage the readers mind into finding the deeper and hidden message that lies within the story. During the beginning of “The Jewelry,” I thought I knew what the outcome would be, however that was not the case. The plot took a completely different turn than I had expected it to. Maupassant used a lot of irony throughout the story, which hid the actual message of it pretty well.…
The Chinese bi-disk is a great example of Spiritual belief that is used in Chinese cultures. The bi-disk is a carved, mostly rounded (Yu) jade disk with a hole that can be of various size. It is used as a status symbol as well as ritual or symbolic purposes. Jade was valued highly due to the physical features such as the hardness and durability, various colors, and the beauty of it once it was polished. (Henze, Ernst-Dieter)…
In about 5000 years of its existence, there have been constant development and changes in distinctive area of the Chinese culture. These areas include art, craft, drama, music, opera, etc. Even with these changes, the Chinese people maintained their cultural values by observing notable festivals like the “Chinese New Year” no matter where they are located around the world. There are threats to the culture from the western countries due to the constant migration of its people to the west. Most of them are getting westernized and tends to forget about their root in the…
Question #1 Part A: Anthropologists ask: How do different cultures define art, and what purposes does art serve? Use any type of art which you would like to explain the anthropological perspective on art. Be sure to refer to some key concepts discussed in the class lectures related to art.
