Previously 46 meters tall, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda stands proudly in Xi’an still today, only 43.3 meters tall. It was built in 707 during the Tang dynasty (618-907) and as ancient architecture, is a great example of the architecture of that time. It is related to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, but is not as well known. It was built with the purpose of storing Buddhist sutras or scripts that a monk called Yi Jing had brought from India. The temple was said to mysteriously be able to withstand great earthquakes and storms without much damage. The secret was only discovered during the 20th century.
