S. Eliot, poem “J. Alfred Prufrock” describes a middle aged man who views life differently. J. Alfred Prufrock as the main character of the poem can be viewed as an obsessive man, who has isolated himself from reality by his emotions. Prufrock, is portrayed as a person who walks the “Streets that follow like a tedious argument” (Eliot, 2015). As he walks the streets he appears to be bothered by the inability to grab hold of any opportunities or take risks in life and with women. J. Alfred Prufrock, views the world as unchanging. He images the world as being the same tomorrow as it is today and yesterday. For he believes he “known them already, known them all: Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons, . . . measured out my life with coffee spoons” (Eliot, 2015). Although intellectual, he is a very indecisive man. He does attempt to overcome his anxieties, but fears he would be made fun of because of his “bald spot in the middle of . . . hair, . . . morning coat, . . . collar mounting firmly to the chin, . . . necktie rich and modest, but asserted by a simple pin, . . . his arms and legs are thin” (Eliot, 2015). One character disassociates himself for the sacks of finding inner peace, while the other avoids interaction and conflict. Both characters obsess but for different reasons. One obsess about how he views the world the be, while the other obsess about completing a task. Walking is a great way to stay fit. In the story and poem, the characters walk for different reasons.
