Big Island Volcanoes

During the Big Island field trip, I learned a lot about volcanoes. First, when we arrived to UH Hilo the volcanologist taught us various of things about volcanoes. He told us that volcanoes were formed from hot spots spewing lava in the ocean and slowly reaching the surface. Once the lava has reached the surface, subduction zones force the lava out which causes an eruption. He also showed that post volcanic research is shown from volcanoes that have not erupted in 20 years, which are called extinct volcanoes. These volcanoes can easily be avoided since scientist are doing research about its pre-eruption. Seeing the halemaumau crater close up showed me that volcanoes are beautiful but dangerous. After going to the Big Island, I learned

Shield volcanoes are formed by many different lava flows that layer over time. Mount Kilauea is a well-known shield volcano in Hawaii. Before it erupts, it is known to inflate as magma pushes upward from its magma chamber. Seismic activity usually precludes Kilauea’s eruptions by about 24 hours. Their eruptions consist mostly of lava flowing out of the summit or through lava tubes in what is known as a flank eruption.…

This week I learned about the three different types of volcanoes and the types of volcanic hazards associated with each type of volcano. This information is important to me because now I understand the hazards associated with living in certain parts of the country that have volcanoes. I understand that the volcanoes found in Hawaii (Shield volcanoes) erupt differently and pose different dangers than the volcanoes in the Cascade Mountain Range (Composite volcanoes). Since I live in Portland, Oregon I was very interested in learning about the hazards involved with Composite volcanoes. Composite volcanoes can create deadly mud and debris flows called lahars which travel down the mountain and can destroy and bury everything in its path.…

There are many known volcanoes that erupt all the time and spread stuff everywhere. “We do not really have an accurate count of the world’s volcanoes, but there are at least a thousand identified magma systems-on land alone-likely to erupt in the future.” (Simkin, Tom and Lee Siebert, How Many Active Volcanoes are There?) What those guys are saying is there are lots of unknown and known volcanoes that they don’t know when they are going to erupt. What they do know is that they all will eventually erupt sometime and spread ash and volcanic rock everywhere.…
