The Big Five Personality Traits and Their Roles From the class clown to the shy artist, personality defines who people are and how the world perceives these characteristics. The Big Five personality traits consist of what is widely accepted as the most basic of human personality by most psychologist. These traits include openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These traits also have smaller and more specific personality traits that fit into these categories. The Big Five personality traits of psychology organize basic human behavior to better understand certain types of personality. Openness to experience is associated with creative intelligence, curiosity, and fantastical cognitive thinking. People who are open tend to be very creative and artistic; So, these people most likely favor art, music, poetry, novels, and adventure. People with high openness are known to be very disorganized due to creative yet messy tendencies. People who are open make up their lack of organization with their critical thinking abilities and their creative nature. People who are not open are more down to earth, straightforward, and strive for perseverance other than creative problem solving. Conscientiousness is basically the opposite of openness meaning that these people tend to be less creative and inept. After learning about openness, one may concur that conscientiousness may be a bad trait since this trait is the opposite, but conscientiousness is perceived as a beneficial trait. Both traits have their positive and negative side effects but being conscientiousness shows more determination and work ethic while openness shows more problem-solving skills. Having both traits positive attributes will be ideal, but for the most part, most people have one trait, lacking the other
