The old man was patient out at sea when he struggled to catch the marlin. He could have at any moment gave up and let the fish go but the old man had patients and never surrendered. The big fish also was patient because it never gave rest to the old man. It never just quit fighting and let the old man catch him. It took days before the battle was over. Even though the battle was long and exhausting both the man and the fish never gave up and had patience.
Lastly both the old man and the big fish had grit. The old man push through the pain and fought like a bull dog to catch the fish. He never gave up even when he was hungry, tried and hurting. Santiago used every bit of his strength and energy to battle the fish. The big fish also had grit in the way it wouldn't stop pulling the boat. It showed no mercy it the way it relentlessly kept pulling at the old man. If either one would have surrendered their true grit would not have been shown.
As too different species, it at first might seem like the old man and the big fish had nothing in common. But as we have seen they both had three characteristics that made them similar. They both experienced pain, were patient, and had grit. The battle seemed to have been harder on Santiago because he was old and not in his prime.
