For Ed Bloom, he encountered many guides who assisted in his overall triumph. One of these guides would be Amos Calloway the ring leader of the freak circus who provided a reason to live and to work hard for Ed, to find and marry Sandra. Amos not only provided a path for Edward to follow but gave him the ultimate reason to follow it. Similarly for Pi, Richard Parker enacted the role of a guide, in order to survive. While witnessing the survival instincts of Richard Parker, it presented Pi a technique of how to overcome this devastating and difficult journey. Due to the experience with Richard Parker and seeing how the natural survival instincts worked with him, it led to Pi discovering the will to survive. It is most evident when Pi describes his reaction after seeing Richard Parker’s attempt to feed himself, “It was a dazzling display of might and speed. Actually, it was not so much the speed that was impressive but the pure animal confidence...Such a mix of ease and concentration, such being-in-the-present, would be the envy of the highest yogis”(Martel, 201). In both plots, a guide develops into a necessity for the protagonists’ survival and ultimate success. For Edward Bloom, Amos Calloway was a great influence in his initial start on his journey.
