Big Fat Rumors

People enjoy succulent gossip every now a then. Not many people can keep a juicy secret for too long any more. As soon as someone hears gossip it usually does not take long for them to tell the first person that lends an ear. That ladies and gentelment is how a big fat rumor gets started. Most of the time it does not matter if the rumor is true or false, whoever is telling the rumor is going to make it sounds extreamly believeable.
For example there is a rumor that started on a website called Associated Media Coverage. The rumor is that a transgender woman was shot and killed in the women’s restroom in Colorado. On May 14, 2016 this website posted a story stating that the shooting did not happen until the department store decided to change

This rumor plays off of the fears and anxieties that people are having because of different stores changing their restroom policies. Rumor plays off more than just fear. Rumors can play off death, conspiratorial theories, or racial tension. In Daniels Goleman’s Anatomy of A Rumor: It Flies on Fear, Goleman states that “The results suggest rumors are a kinds of opportunistic information virus, thriving because of their ability to create the very anxieties that make then spread, and to mutate to fit new situations.”(Goleman 487.) In the case of Ms. Wright and Mrs. Workman this is very true. There are a lot of men and women that are extremely afraid of the new bathroom polices. Websites like Associated Media Coverage start rumors like this to get the public fired up and to keep them interested in reading the their stories. As reported by Robert H. Knapp, there are seven rules as to what makes a “good rumor”. The one most suited with the transgender woman being shot and killed is the very first rule on Knapp’s list. Rule number one states that “No successful rumor may exceed a length or complexity greater than the memory span of the group through which it phases.” (Knapp 496.) This rumor is short, sweet, and to the point. It tells the whole story just in the title

INT 420 Deona Sherrill Paper #1 There are literally thousands of web sites out there that claim to be news sources and many of these web sites are conspiracy sites and/or groups who think they can publish rumors as facts. This can wreak havoc on the internet and in some people’s lives and I think it is highly unethical to publish anything that has not first been proven to be true by finding the basis for their stories on facts and not rumors. I remember one story that flew the rumor mill last May about how the US Military was going to invade Texas or put Texas under Martial Law or at the very least was training our troops on how to put the entire United States under Martial Law. In reality, some of our special op troops were being brought…

    • Except for the Martians using a Heat-Ray to kill a lot of people in Chapter 5, things are pretty ordinary that Friday night around the rest of England. The news that a cylinder from Mars has landed on Earth doesn't get much attention and certainly isn't treated seriously. • For instance, Henderson wired his newspaper to tell this story, but they thought it was a hoax and didn't want to run the article until they could confirm it with him. But they couldn't confirm it with him because the Martians burned him. •…

Knapp had explained what the three types of rumors are and what they do to feed people emotionally. The first type is the Pipe-dream or Wish Rumor and this rumor reveals the hopes and wishes of the people involved in the rumor. The second type is a Bogie rumor and this rumor shows the fears and stressful thoughts of people that are involved in the rumor. The last type of rumor is a Wedge-Driving Aggression rumor, and that’s the type of rumor the 9/11 rumors are. Wedge-Driving Aggression rumors are rumor that “divide groups and destroy loyalties,” according to Robert H. Knapp.…

Recent in the news I have been hearing about the Trans Bathroom Law and it genuinely confuses me as to why it is such an issues. Why do people care so much about a stranger's genitals that would prompt them to make a law forcing them to use the incorrect bathroom? I am a transman living in Texas just trying to get by. This law affects me and people around me because I am a mostly passing man having to use the Women’s bathroom. I do not understand why forcing a trans person to use the wrong bathroom is more acceptable than having the decency to just let them use the restroom of gender they identify with.…

Everyone who is not transgender and allowed to use the bathroom of their gender legally, is automatically privileged. Never will non-transgender individuals ever walk into the bathroom of their gender worrying about legality. Never will a non-transgender walk into a public bathroom and be judged, leered at, or observed with a careful eye. The New York Times editorial board article “Transgender Law Makes North Carolina Pioneer in Bigotry” writes, “By promoting the ludicrous idea that transgender women are inherently dangerous, the law endangers citizens who are already disproportionately vulnerable to violence and stigmatization.” According to this source, the law reinforces the narrative and oppression against transgender people.…

Dr. Kimmel’s findings suggest that rumors like these thrive because of the anxiety they create in people. Rumors are becoming more and more powerful each day, which has sparked a need for a means to stop them. Goleman then goes on to explain the role anxiety plays in a rumor. He explains that if people experience anxiety due to the rumor they are more likely to spread the rumor as news and not a rumor. In addition, tracking a rumor as it spreads helps those affected, such as a company, to plan and advertise in the area where it is most prominent to help eliminate the rumor.…
