Nevertheless, big decisions that are made every day lead to the future events that take place. These big decisions could not have happened without historical events to begin with. History is a subject based on story telling. Sometimes, it is based off letters and written documents. History is not written down for others to learn in a nonbiased opinion in the present moment. Historians must go through these documents later and decide what is biased, and what is not. They must read about an event from multiple perspectives and try and pick out what happened and what is an opinion.…

History has always been a big part of my life. I remember in first grade pouring all of my affections onto the historical fiction American girl doll books in the elementary school library and imagining myself as a Swedish immigrant in 1854, or as a young patriot in 1774. During second and third grade I devoted my free time to reading about the Civil War and the Spanish explorers that conquested through my native Florida. In fourth grade I remember leaping through a native american pottery exhibit on a field trip to Tallahassee, desperately trying to obtain all of the knowledge the signs held before being dragged away by my classmates and chaperone. On a fifth grade field trip I was left behind at an exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center because I was too engrossed in the history of rhesus monkeys being shot into space to notice that my entire class had moved on to the I-Max theater.…

History is often seen as memorizing dates of battles and names of people who are long dead. However, I view history as the story of how modern society came to be instead. I took multiple history courses throughout high school, but my favorite class was AP World History. Rather than being isolated in one particular location, I studied how multiple cultures interacted and how they influenced each other. The course introduced me to regions, such as the Middle East, that I previously never even thought about.…

The American Revolution was a major turning point in American history. It marked the beginning of a new powerful nation and essentially changed the nation politically and socially; however, to some extent, it did not lead to an economic change. There were some benefits to the war; the establishment of the Declaration of Independence, a stronger, centralized government, and eventually progressed the roles of women and slaves. On the contrary, there were still diversions between the rich and poor during and after the Revolution.…

A Radical’s Radical Plan to Eliminate Radicals When I was younger, I remember many days where I came home from school and asked my dad “Why do we have to learn history. It’s not like it's going to help me at all when I’m a grownup.” I could understand why we would need to learn subjects like English or math, and their applications in the “real world”, but I was always stumped on history. Puzzling me, he would respond every time by saying “those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.”…

There have been many facts that ultimately decide if an event is historically significant. The amount of change, type of change , and why it changes are important factors in deciding if something is historically significant. I also think that historical significance can be different to every person, especail people in different countries. People in Africa are going to find very different things significant compared to someone in Canada because they have different cultures, beliefs, and ways of living. The government, teachers, parents, media, and other influential people in a person's daily life can also influence what we value as significant.…

In his speech, “Knowing History and Knowing Who We Are,” historian David McCullough demonstrates that it is important to learn and understand history because of its influence on present-day society. McCullough emphasizes that past generations were inexperienced and imperfect, but their improvisational character shaped destiny. Additionally, McCullough mentions the “hubris of the past”; everything that people are doing now, having now, and thinking now is the best it has ever been. Finally, McCullough stresses that today’s citizens cannot understand the decisions made throughout time without learning history to recognize and comprehend the differences between past and present-day attitudes.…

Pivotal Points Events that have happened in the past, more often than not, explain numerous events that happen in the future. These events lead to many changes in times to come. People in society today spend lots of their time studying history in order to find out why things are the way that they are in today 's world, which explains why children are instructed to take some sort of history class throughout their educational development. Taking these classes can not only broaden a student 's range of knowledge in general, but it can explain why many things are the way that they are in today 's world. For example, learning about Thomas Edison, and how he invented the light bulb explains how we have some of the amazing technology that we have today.…
