Big Brothers Big Sisters: Community Analysis

I have always known that I wanted to serve in the justice system; the concept has constantly been reaffirmed in my mind as new life experiences continue to lead me in that direction. The problem with that particular direction is that it has several paths to take, and deciding which path to take takes a lot of time and consideration in order to make the best choice. Over time, I have realized that my individual strengths and personality are best suited to succeed in the legal field rather than the political or law enforcement areas of the justice system. One of my first experiences that led me to this conclusion was my involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters. As a Big Sister, I learned that there are many children in the world that need an …show more content…
I began my undergraduate degree at Washburn University as a Communications major. During my first semester, I joined Zeta Tau Alpha; through this organization, I was able to become involved within the community through philanthropy. As a fraternity, we focused on raising awareness for breast cancer and promoting breast cancer education to women within the community with events such as Think Pink Week, during which we held multiple fundraisers, handed out ribbons and pamphlets, and made blankets for those suffering to use while taking radiation or chemotherapy treatments. Outside of this philanthropy, one of my favorite times of service with my fraternity was when we held a game night for the residents at a senior care home during the holiday season. This stands out in my mind because it led me to realize that greatest way to serve is often through time and fellowship. Unfortunately, due to financial limitations and work schedules, I was unable to continue as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha after my initial …show more content…
This characteristic has given me the ability to finish my Bachelor’s degree in two and a half years, rather than the projected four years. I have accomplished this by taking summer classes and at times larger course loads during the spring and fall semesters. Further, I have been able to work a combination of three part-time jobs simultaneously to equal full-time work in order to support myself and my education. I currently work for both the President’s Office as Dr. Farley’s Intern, and the Student Life office as the Student worker. These two particular jobs have allowed me the benefit of remaining involved on campus while simultaneously working. I also hold a job off campus. During the 2014 fall semester I worked at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, after classes and my shifts at my on campus jobs. Often, I would not leave the hotel until nearly midnight. However, I was still able to manage my course work and receive a 4.0 semester

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

However, I also understand that my previous experiences place me in a position that will allow me to reach out to the society. By serving the public as a public officer in not only administering the human and material resources, I have been able to relate better to the issues they face. This is in light to the levels of education, the need for employment, financial strains and accessing resources and amenities such as governments and communal lands, educational institutions, cattle markets, graveyards, parks, pathways and even legal aid. Other than that, I also seek to uphold the law in my vocation, and this will also ensure that crimes do not go unpunished, and when they do get punished, they will face fair punishment. There will be no other way to do this, other than train as a lawyer with excellent standards and to represent individuals with minimal financial empowerment.…
