Big Brother 1984 Analysis

“There was nothing left in them except sorrow for what they had done, and love of Big Brother. It was touching to see how much they loved him.” (Orwell 255). Big Brother is the icon of the Party in the book 1984 and is seen as the leader of said group. Throughout it Big Brother uses varying types of control to make sure his people do what is “best” for the rest of the Party. These forms of control get into the people’s head and are forced unto them by the Party as well as snuck into their everyday lives. Big Brother is always watching and always monitoring them as they live their lives. Their slogans which are posted everywhere are “ WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.” (Orwell 4). All throughout the book Winston says that the Party suppresses certain things like sex, emotions, and speech. The Party discourages sex unless it is for raising the population of the Party. Due to this Winston was married once to a girl who couldn’t even touch Winston unless she was forced. “She threw herself down on the bed, and at once, without any kind of preliminary, in the most coarse, horrible way you can imagine, pulled up her skirt. I-.” (Orwell 67) During this Winston and a girl named Julia were having sex behind the Party’s back and were eventually caught by the Thought Police. After they are caught then they are put into the Ministry of Love where they torture you until you feel what they say you feel and see what they say you see. The Party also releases a dictionary with the words of their official language Newspeak.
